Cafu by a distance. Better both defensively & offensively.

Cafu, better defender also good going forward although probably never scored or assisted near the amount Alves did.

Maicon at his best I would say was better than Alves too, more technical, better cross and shot and was sensational for about 3 years at Inter although Alves lasted a lot longer than him.

Alves is nowhere near Cafu's class.

Very debatable. Alves provided a ridiculous amount of assists whilst he was at Barca. I think I'm correct in saying that he provided more assists to Messi than anyone else.

Aye, I wouldnt really associate Cafu with assisting goals. Was a more tactical player and winger like from the back.

Could run with the ball, had good pace, clever passing and a better passer and crosser of the ball than Alves but Alves was more naturally attacking and got in the box or attempted more crosses, would attack more freely without thinking of defending etc compared to Cafu who always held good positions and was smarter in how he played.

I voted Cafu better but I think people are underrating Alves. He was one of the pivotal players in the best club side of all time and has been tremendously successful.

Its actually a great question. Cafu was just an absolute machine and never ran out of steam. Would be stoppage time after the 90 mins and he would still be bomving forward like the match just kicked off.

People will always prefer the more complete package though.

Cafu, Zanetti, Lahm and Maldini would probably always win a vote against just pure attacking full-backs like Alves and Maicon or a pure defensive one like Thuram. Just because they were seen as more balanced players.

Roberto Carlos though was more pure attacking but he was just a step above the rest like Messi is to forwards Carlos was to attacking full-backs, good crosser of the ball, good shot, great pace and got up and down the park for fun, probably one of the fittest players of his day and probably provided about 25 goals and assists per season for over a decade.

But he could just pass the ball to Messi at the halfway line and Messi would go on to dribble past 5 players and bag. Still an assist for Alves.

Cafu was fitter than Carlos & most other footballers.
I seem to remember they did tests on his endurance & other aspects
of fitness & he near enough broke the test machine.

That's not how assists are recorded and you know fine well that he didn't do that with the majority of assists anyway.

    Definitely Cafu

There was Cafu vs Lahm a couple years ago on here and for the life of me I couldn't choose, but this one should be near unanimous, barring the obvious few

    Cafu, definitely.

Can't remember the Lahm v Cafu poll but Lahm is also far better than Alves.

Well looks I'm in the minority, nostalgia will play a part in picking Cafu, the same way people think the Brazilian Ronaldo is better than Cristiano Ronaldo.

For me I think Alves is the all round better footballer. Under Pep he was basically an extra midfielder, almost a playmaker even and had such a great partnership with Messi. He's also a great overlapping fullback and a darn good crosser too. I think Cafu is probably better defensively but Alves is the all round better footballer for me.
