The Daily Mail, the bastion of brilliance (if racism, xenophobia and hate are your forte) today once again attacked the Welsh and Welsh Language.

They do so through Roger Lewis, a disaster of a journalist who proudly claims to be Welsh before launching into diatribes of hate against his people. He previously described Welsh as a "monkey language" and “not many people in full possession of their faculties would find it appealing or necessary to try to turn themselves into a ‘real Welshman’".

He's a racist who seems to get a pass because he hides under the claim that as a Welshman, he can say these things.

In today's paper he compared Welsh-speaking people, whom count for 20% of the population, over 60% in parts of Wales such as where I live unfavourably with the Taliban and Soviet-Era Communism.

    this is the article:

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...ROGER-LEWIS-nutty-Welsh-Language-Society.html

    this is my reply:

    http://nathenamin.com/2012/11/26/da...an-and-the-rants-of-a-hate-filled-journalist/

    What do you all think?

F**k the Daily Mail makes me so angry...how do they get away with such blatant sensationalist LIES! they cant even source their own stories, they are worse than the Sun!

    The Daily LOL.

    * sham of a newspaper and indicative of the consistent dumbing down of society in general.

You're linking to the article, thereby pushing web traffic to the Daily Mail up and earning them more easy money.

The Mail, Sun and Record have made a living off provoking either moral outrage or outrage among their ideological opponents and the best thing to do is ignore them and, above all, NEVER EVER LINK TO ANY OF THEIR ARTICLES, thereby depriving them of the web traffic that earns them money.

EDIT: applaud you standing up for the Welsh language though. It's been an uphill battle to get any recognition for the Celtic languages and this must be defended tooth and nail. Heb iaith heb gwlad.

Aye much like the bitter hun journalists of this country, they purposely print articles like this to get traffic to their website. And by the looks of things, it works.

English looks like a jumble of random letters to non-native speakers of English as well and that's before we even get into the frankly absurd spelling system of the language (the Welsh spelling system is far more phonetic and therefore 'better' than the English one).

I wouldn't get too upset over this, the Daily Mail pretty much writes stuff like this on a daily basis. I actually think they just randomly pick a goup of people belonging to a certain ethnic group/nationality/seuxality etc and think of the most offensive thing they can say about them throw in a random claim as to why their justified in saying it and then try to pass it off as journalism.

Melanie Philipps is enough of a reason for me to never buy or read the Daily Mail.

haha! that's some reaction he got out of you.

He goes a bit far but i don't see much wrong with it. I don't see how he's a racist?

I agree with his basic point though, it's like Salmond trying to bring gaelic lessons into Scottish schools. * off.

Apart from the fact Welsh is a functioning language for a quarter of the nation and not some gimmick

Would it not be easier if everyone just learned English? It's not exactly a language you can use anywhere in most of Wales as you say it's only a quarter, and you definitely can't use it anywhere outside Wales.

I get it's a patriotism thing, however it's a bit pointless in my opinion.

It makes sense that we'd learn a Scottish language instead of schools teaching Spanish,French and Italian. Our native language has been almost eradicated,it's been through bans and it's use discouraged for so long now that we feel it's something to be laughed at or ashamed of.I think the Welsh should be pretty proud of themselves for keeping their language alive.I'm quite envious of their success in doing so tbh.

Learning the likes of French is going to be far more useful than learning a dead language.

It's not dead, quite far from it in some parts of Scotland, but if it does die then it will be because of attitudes like yours.
I think it's a language worth keeping around, just as French is worth learning.
Even if it was taught like French was in my school, after a certain year you could choose another language if you wanted. It makes sense to try keep some of our heritage and traditions going, especially if there is a possibility of Scotland becoming an independent nation again.

Don't agree mate. I think time would be much better spent in teaching children languages that many of them may use in their future careers. Keeping tradition is not enough to warrant wasting a children's education time teaching it.

How much functional French, German or Spanish does anybody take from High School languages though?

I took German, scored a 1 in my Standard Grade and I can't speak very much German at all (just the basics like my name is Ryan, what is your name etc).

If there was a countrywide curriculum of Gaelic, and it had been going the same length of time as French/German/Spanish, then it'd be safe to say it would no longer be a "dead language".

As the poster at the top of this page says I am envious of the Welsh and how well they have done at preserving their national language. I can't speak a solitary word of Gaelic but if it was an option at School then you can bet your bottom dollar I'd have opted for that over any of the others on offer.
