New Wembley Stadium
Celtic today claimed their second trophy of the pre-season with an impressive 2-0 victory over Tottenham. Tony Mowbray made 10 changes to the side which beat Al-Ahly 5-0 on Friday afternoon and played what was pretty much last years reserve side. Despite this the young Bhoys held their own and fired themselves into an early lead when Chris Killen got on the end of a perfect Paul Caddis cross to fire home a bullet header on 9 minutes.
Tottenham reacted well to the goal and almost levelled minutes later when Marc Crosas was dispossessed on the edge of the Celtic area. O'Hara took the ball from Crosas and played in Marcus Bent who controlled the ball and fired a low shot but Zaluska stayed strong and pulled off a Boruc-esque save.
The beautiful passing game continued through the rest of the match and Tottenham were struggling to deal with the pass and move style of Tony Mowbrays side. The second goal of the game and ultimately the icing on the cake came from Georgios Samaras. The big Greek striker received a pass on the half way line and turned his marker, leaving him a few yards behind. He continued his run and was supported by Killen all the way but decided to go himself as he took a touch inside the box and fired home a powerful drive to the far side of the goal.
A third could have been added to Celtics lead minutes after the half time interval when Pat McCourt went on a sizzling solo run, taking on and beating 5 Tottenham players on his march into the 6 yard area but his shot was too weak and well off target as it bobbled harmlessly wide of the far post.
Tottenham would continue to try and fight their way back into the match but the stand in captain Darren O'Dea organised his defence well and the young Irishman played an absolutely amazing game at centre back, claiming the official Celtic websites Man of the match award.
The young Irishman showed great determination to prevent Tottenham pulling one back half way through the second half when a flurry inside the box led to him clearing the ball from the line and getting in the way of a rebound shot from Jamie O'Hara. Zaluska showed his appreciation to the centre back with a pat on the shoulder and a rallying call to the team to keep their heads.
But as the final whistle was sounded Celtic were crowned Champions of Wembley. As they had been the first Scottish side to run out at the huge impressive stadium, they would leave the first Scottish side to win silverware there also.
A hugely impressive pre-season continues for Tony Mowbray and his side as they have now scored 10 goals and conceeded absolutely zero. Next up is the visit of Dinamo Moscow at Celtic Park.
