I wanted to respond to Cheesepoo's comment without further derailing the missing plane thread.

"Seeing as our support is just a microcosm of the world in general, as there are so many different view points, it really shouldn't make you any more sad than it would to know there are people like this in general."

Afraid I fundamentally disagree. For a start to make a rather pedantic point Glasgow Celtic is obvioulsy based around a team from Northern Europe so you wouldn't expect them to be totally representative of the world in microcosm in terms of how what percentage of the fans are practising Hindu's etc.

However even within a smaller geographical sphere I think most people would agree there are certain thngs or politics that would be more specific to Glasgow Celtic and it's support than other clubs so I don't think our support is generally the same as any other.

The traditonal support for Irish Republicanism by a large section of our support obviously sets us apart from other clubs on this Island.

I think most people even those that don't share those views agree that traditionally Celtic's support has leant to the left. That is why some peoples views on this forum stand out ( and that is not to say that there views are wrong.)

However in my experience of following Celtic with supporters clubs from the North of England and from Ireland far right views never have and never shoould be tolerated by the Celtic support I know. The internet is a bit different as, as long as people obey the site rules they can say what they want however for me anyone who would identify with the far right is completely missing something about why Celtic was formed in the spirit of inclusion and helping the poor and indeed seems pretty ignorant of the history of emmigration that was forced upon generations of Irish people. The far right is only interested in looking for scapegoats and picking on those less fortunate than themselves.

    Thoughts ?

Agree totally, anyone with right wing views, who support Celtic, is basically a hypocrite

I think though most of our support are certainly left-wing politically, although there's a fair amount of people who are quite conservative about their views regarding morals and society (separate from politics). On top of being a support with Irish republican links, we've also got strong Catholic links, so that's to be expected. I like the mix we have here.

I think it all gets spoken about too much on here tbh, atleast 10% of threads must turn into political debates.

Right. So if you believe in the theory of free market economics then celtic cannot be your favourite football team? :97:

I think the Celtic fan base is a sizable collective so it encompasses all sort of people and opinions, and from all over the world. But are we significantly different from other fan groups in the UK? I would say probably not. Sure, due to the Irish connection we have more fans motivated by Irish politics than teams who have no connection to Ireland. But I would argue that our fan base in generally typical of its Scottish, working class, male, fan base. That is, if you look at any most other fan groups in Scotland with that same demographic, you will find they typically hold similar social and political ideas. We (as a collective) may have different politics from teams in London and the South East but then so would supporters from the North of England or most regions in Scotland.

And then there is the rather simplistic nature of 'left vs right' politics. There is lots of middle ground that is a big grey area and I think most people nowadays are capable of forming an opinion on various issues across the political spectrum. All in all, I think football actually plays a very small role in defining politics for the vast majority of people and any differences between teams will be due to regional issues far more than football culture.

That bit's just ridiculous. How many other clubs in Scotland have a significant section of their fanbase who support Irish republicanism? How many sympathise with physical force nationalism? How many supports have a majority in favour of Scottish independence, particularly in the West? We're atypical of the region.

This is a completely wrong view.

I know plenty of people who have right wing views that support this great football club, most would be more to the center right, but their still right wing.

A point i like to point out to people who are like myself, supporters of Irish Republicanism, (which this club has a massive base around) who are more left wing.
The IRA in the 40's had meeting with * officials and where more than happy to support an invasion of the 6 counties by said army.

This seems to be a piece of history which likes to be ignored by supporters of Irish Republicans these days.
Yes some will use the argument 'you enemies enemy is my friend' but that is a very naive way of looking at the situation.

I know i hold pretty unpopular views in general, but in this world of free speech that we live in i am as entitled to my views as some who supports Marxist/Leninism, am i not?

The other problem i have with the left, that support the IRA, the IRA are/where a pretty ultra-Nationalist organization, i always taught the left supporters should be more in support of the INLA as they are the Marxist organisation in the country.

Like it or not Celtic were born out of a political situation. Sad thing is right wingers have attached themselves to Celtic over the years and free market supporters.

What i really meant by it was there are sure to be people who hold much different viewpoints than the majority might, on here, for example. There are tens of thousands of celtic supporters so surely some will have majorly contrasting views. They can still support a football team even though they don't agree with the majority of fans.

I was mainly trying to say that just because someone who has completely differing views with you, supports the same team as you, it shouldn't make you feel sad. It should be a mute point. Choosing a football team to support shouldn't be a major factor in the definition of 'you'.

Well not many as regards Irish politics, but I covered that in the post. People who have no connection to Ireland are less likely to care about Irish politics, so of course Celtic fans from Ireland or part of the Irish diaspora will be more motivated than average on the subject. But in the grand sphere of politics, and everything it encompasses, Irish republicanism is a tiny little part of it. And even then I don't think the views of Celtic fans would be hugely polarised to the opinions of many other fans. It is just most other fan bases in Scotland and England don't really give a toss (and why would they).

If you look at voting trends in areas across the country, I would suggest that you would see Celtic fans voting in the same way as most working class, Scottish males. If you look at the opinions voiced on here regarding the running of the country, the Tories, welfare cuts, taxation, government spending, immigration, religion in politics, trade unionism, foreign policy, etc, etc, I would expect to see similar opinions come from areas with similar demographics regardless of favourite football teams.

Also, while i'd say i'm neutral on your other points here i just need to clear something up. Reading back i kinda worded this wrong. What i meant was that, like the world in general there are many different view points and beliefs in our support.Mostly based on Irish, Northern Europe and American interests. These can radically change from person to person, just like in the world, where beliefs can vary drastically from person to person. I didn't mean that the support has attributes of all the far flung places of the world, if you get me.

    Aye whatever.

Care to explain why? I assume you are a Marxist, or leftist at least, while i do not agree with you i am not going to try and belittle you and demand that you don't have them views.
    Free speech.
