Celtic 4 Kilmarnock 0
![]()
It was a cold evening in Glasgow tonight, as Celtic entertained Kilmarnock. The quality of the football on display, however, was enough to warm the blood. Celtic kept the ball well, playing with style throughout. During the first half, the side appeared ready to keep the ball all night. The midfield were particularly good, with Joe Ledley stringing all the plays together. On form like this, fans will be praying he signs a new deal. The Celts accumulating over 70% of the ball in the first 45 minutes.
Straight from the whistle, Celtic were on the front foot. Scott Brown exemplified this best, winning the first 50/50 of the game. The opposition did not appear prepared for the challenge that faced them. From back to front, the side seemed composed and ready. At right back, Fisher, was making his tenth appearance of the side, and Neil will take a lot of heart from how he has so calmly slotted into his team.
One of the more experienced players, James Forrest, despite his young age, was in buoyant mood. He was in a wicked temper, willing to run and drive his marker all over the pitch. The young Scot found himself on the left side of the field, cleverly slipping Joe Ledley through, and the midfielder fired home with relish. Samson was left with no chance, as the power of the shot and the accuracy was too much for him.
It wouldn’t be too long before the goalkeeper would have to pick the ball out of the net again. This time James Forrest was on the right flank, taking Killie’s defence for a stroll, ducking and weaving his way past his marker. The speed at which his low driven ball came across the Killie goal seemed to catch Ashcroft by surprise, who swung a leg out and steered the ball past Samson.
Kilmarnock must’ve been looking a reprieve as they went in at half-time. Neil Lennon’s men looked like no one would stop them, as they searched for their 23rd game unbeaten. The only change at the half was Kiltie coming off for Nicholson, as Kilmarnock looked to get a better hold on the game. Celtic, on the other hand, took to the pitch much like the first, albeit in a more relaxed fashion. This led to more moments of complacency in possession, but the home side never appeared troubled.
If anything, it was a surprise that a third didn’t arrive sooner. However, arrive it did, as Joe Ledley was again causing mischief, chipping a lovely ball over the defence to Charlie Mulgrew. The ever reliable, Mulgrew, controlled well and stabbed the ball past a helpless Samson, who must’ve been wondering how many more times he’d have to pick the ball out of his net.
Unfortunately for him, there was more to come as late substitute, Amido Balde, came on to make a mark and impress his manager. It was Samson that would have the biggest hand in the Portuguese striker scoring, but it was the enthusiasm of the tall striker that troubled Killie most. His movement and the curve on his shot was too much for the ‘keeper, much to the delight of the home crowd, who’ve welcomed Balde with open arms.
Kris Commons came close to extending his awesome scoring form, otherwise it was business as usual for Neil Lennon’s men as this win makes it 13 wins now on the trot. St. Mirren must be wishing the Aberdeen game was going ahead, as they will not appreciate facing the Celts on this form.
Fact: Fraser Forster has now not conceded a goal in over 1,000 consecutive league minutes.
