Matthews wonder goal gets Celtic going
After a week away in the sunny climes of Gran Canaria it was back to SPL business. For the Hoops this season there has been a real title race on the cards. Not simply from Aberdeen but also possibly from a very exciting Dundee United side.
It has certainly been a transitional season, a frustrating one. Yet we still find ourselves in 4 competitions, with the league entirely in our own hands, a semi-final against the undead and a last 32 tie against one of the worlds biggest clubs. It is easy to blow our current league position out of the water in that Celtic shouldn't be playing catch up after christmas. That much is true, with the squad we have compared to the rest of the league its worrying but not disastrous...yet.
Today's victory against a high flying Hamilton shows that Celtic are on the right path, it might just take another month or two before we see real daylight between us and the rest of the pack. Aberdeen themselves dropped points today against Dundee. Even with their impressive run of form with 8 straight league wins before today they still find themselves with the league out of their own hands. If the Bhoys win their two games in hand they go four points clear at the top of the league.
That fact cannot be swept aside which seemingly every non-Celtic fan in Scotland cannot understand. Aberdeen haven't been in this position in 30 years, they don't know how to sustain a title race, they haven't faced that kind of pressure before and today illustrate's this perfectly. A must win game for Celtic to put pressure on the Dons resulted in a 2 point gain when later on the Dons could not capitalise on their early lead against Dundee.
That mettle will be tested again. Celtic have the opportunity to go top of the league on Wednesday against Motherwell. This will apply a huge amount of pressure to Aberdeen who face St. Johnstone on Friday. Today could be the turning point, can Aberdeen deal with the pressure week in week out?
Henderson seals the points for Celtic
Onto Hamilton, their recent demise with two defeats in a row, has shown how badly they have been affected by the departure of Alex Neil to Norwich. I would predict that they will continue to fall down the table, finishing in the top six. While Celtic did not run out very convincing winners, they still however were not troubled and as soon as young Henderson fired in the second the game was over. There is still fight left in the Hamilton team but it seems the spark provided by Neil has gone.
