Just wanted to ask if any of our resident stats experts on the site can outline or explain what the realistic time is for Celtic to qualify automatically again for the CL Groups.
What does the co-efficient have to be? What does the national teams success have to do with European standing?
Can we improve our situation by regular qualification and progress in europe?
Do we need clubs like Aberdeen, ICT and Dundee Utd to get into the groups to help improve things.

The reason for this question, is until we are regularly achieving regular automatic qualification for the groups, we won't have the finances to push onto the next level and be regular last 16 qualifiers.

    Thoughts?

Never probably. We need Scotlands co-efficient to improve and that isnt going to happen when we are the only team from Scotland that can even win a * game in Europe

The National team has nothing to do with it.

And it will most likely never happen again.

The coefficient points needed to get it back are about 5.5 per season for the League. Which given Scotland gets 4 European places means, Scottish teams need to get about 22 coefficient points between them every season for 5 years in a row.

Aberdeen got 1.8 points last season and so did St Johnstone and Motherwell got 1.3, so that means Celtic would have to have made up the other 17 points, that means we'd probably have to get to about the Europa League QF after finishing 3rd in the Champions League. Celtic only got 7.8 points so fell about 9 points short.

Aberdeen and St.Johnstone have both done well recently, I reckon atleast 1 team other than us will make the groups next season.

To get it back probably 2 other Scottish teams need to reach the Group Stages of Europe and win a couple of games. So like next season Aberdeen and Inverness must get into the Europa League and try to get 4-6 points in the Group.

Then they'd need to do the same for another atleast 3 years after that.

Given that no diddy Scottish team has reached the Groups in Europe since 2007 I think then it shows that it'll never be done.

For Celtic to get it back alone, we'd need to do as well as a team like Man City, Bayer Leverkusen and Zenit St Petersburg or slightly better than Shakhtar Donetsk, Napoli, Tottenham and Basel - every year.

I think We got in or around 16 or so for reaching the last 16.. We just need the other teams to do slightly better.. Maybe scrape one Europa league place even and we could be on our way. Unlikely though.

We struggled in the qualifiers and how much more is our squad worth ? They did well compared to the likes of Motherwell.

We'd need help from other Scottish clubs.

It would need to be around the time in 2008 when we were in the last 16, the huns reached the UEFA cup final and Aberdeen were beating * Bayern:56:

Most likely never see that happening again and that was only 7 year ago.

The Huns not competing in Europe has certainly been the major factor we get so few points, say what you want about them but they were still getting into the occasional group stage way up until they went bust and those points combined with whatever we would get were enough to keep us up there in terms of qualification rights, quite predictably Aberdeen, St Johnstone, Motherwell and co simply haven't been able to contribute and until that changes we are going to be stuck where we are.

I do agree that it does put it into perspective when even Cyprus are above us.

Hard to believe you got straight in from winning the SPL. What did second place get again? Third QR? Those were the days beating Oldco to a title then qualifying for the groups in the same day:54:

Automatic qualification is a long way off unfortunately. I just wish that some other Scottish teams could get into Europe along side us each season. It would be fantastic for the game as well.

Imagine the likes of Aberdeen, Hearts and ICT in the Europa along with us in the CL. The money that would pour into our game would be brilliant.

You never know, maybe one of them will get in with us this summer.

It's near impossible without Rangers. Like someone said I think we need to be reaching the latter stages of Europe every single season. And even with them doing ok in Europe it would still be difficult.

Personally, I'd limit automatic qualification to Champions only but I'm very biased obviously. Even still, Europe isn't going to become fairer when we're going through three rounds to qualify while teams are qualifying automatically without winning their league.

I'm sure it does. It the reason why Spanish and English teams are seeded without ever playing Europe before.

Guaranteed group stage for Champions is the number 1 thing Celtic should push for above all else. Even if it involved expanding the Champions League.

To get automatic qualification to CL group stages the national team coefficient has everything to do with it.
The club coefficient gets a % of the country allocation depending on how many teams are in the CL.
Also Scotland are currently ranked by UEFA as 24 which puts Celtic in 2nd rd qualifiers.
To get to the Automatic Group stage place Scotland has to be in either of the folowing
    Winner of league ranked 1-13
Runner up of league ranked 1-6
3rd place in league ranked 1-3

The country coefficient has got absolutely nothing to do with the national team.
