A Lesson To Us All

I found a video on youtube tonight that has really inspired me. I hate Rangers as a football team as much as anybody in the world. But I need to grow as a person and just hate Rangers as a footballing rival and not as a religious rival. Watch this video......

I love this video. It is a reminder that there are good Rangers men out there. Some are scum of course but there are good ones too. This video gives me so much hope that one day we will be able to put the sectarian/religious divide behind us and just have a good footballing rivalry on the go. I will always respect Walter Smith and Ally McCoist for what they done for Tommy in that video. I might get shot down for saying these things and posting this thread but I really wanted to post this because this video really inspired me.

 

There are obviously good rangers fans and there are scum same in our support! it really is good to see the united greif for tommy here youre right. I dont and have never seen rangers as a religious rival becasue even though i am a devout catholic i never discriminate against someone for religion. The bigotry is dying but i dont see the hate dying.

Of course mate. I will too. But I'm tryin really hard to just hate them on a football level and cut out all the other stuff. I've no cracked it yet but I'm trying and videos like that one in the OP do inspire me to try harder.

 

I don't hate anyone unless they are a direct threat to me or my family.

To me the rivalry is a sporting rivalry, not a rivalry of hate. When I was in Glasgow, I watched Old Firm games with my best mate and his dad, who are both Rangers fans, it was a great laugh. I couldn't think of any better people to watch the games with, that I know of personally.

There are some Rangers players in history that I regard as some of my favourites.

 

Great video..... Hate them as a footballing rival but thats as far as I go. Without them, I hate to say, but we wouldnt have as much love and passion for our own team and I have alot of respect for the one's (Maybe not many) who feel the same way as I do.

 

hello i have meet many good rankers i say to all good rankers when at ibrox tap his sholder and say no not in my clubs name, i have seen the pack mentality of both, but not one decent rankers supporter will do it, but i have gotten into barneys to stop them getting a kicking just a thought

 

Since ive grown up in australia the old firm rivalary is just seen as a local derby rivalary. Yes i understand how over the years much of its been viewed as religious but to me its just one of the worlds biggest sporting rivlaries. For that reason ill "hate" the rangers, in that sense i want celtic to do better, but times such as the rangers uefa cup final ill support them for the sake of scottish football, as win in europe would have been good for the spl as a whole.

On a slightly related note my mum was watching the bill the other night (i know it was cancelled in england, but its heaps behind here) and i was walking past and the episode started with news videos of fan riots caused by rangers fans, everyone one of them in a rangers jersey. Made me laugh

generally, i hate rangers fans for reasons outside football (no surrender, they have no clue what it means, when, or why it was said)
too be quite honest i dont have a problem with the players, for the most part they seem to be nice people

I hate rangers fans when they say inflammatory things like watp and big jock knew.

I don't hate them at all for religious reasons, even though I was brought up in a catholic family, I would much rather purely hate them on footballing terms.

There will always be a hate between the two sets of fans but what I think is dying out is the real sectarianism, thankfully!

 

good thread. i will always hate rangers as a team, because they are our closest rivals in terms of ability and our local rivals and we have a long history of rivalry.

i know both sets of fans have decent people and twats supporting their team, no doubt about it. i respect the rangers fans that enjoy the rivalry between the two clubs and dont take it further than what happens on the pitch, and that way me and my hun friends enjoy decent banter about the old firm.

although i do feel that this rivalry is vital to both clubs.

 

I'm a younger 16 y/o Celtic fan from England so the religious / political history of Celtic has never affected me at all, but some of the posting on thing such as internet forums from Rangers fans and Celtic fans sickens me. We're just as bad as each other when it comes to bigotry. I notice that both fans call each other team 'scotlands shame', both have similar 'scum' nicknames, both sides are extremely biased and that both sides think the scottish media is against us; we say 'the daily hun' on here, but on rangers sites it's 'the daily bhoy'.

However, I love having a rival, there's nothing more exciting then a fierce old firm game and I'd hate to see that go away. I think our rivalry should be a healthy rivalry which is based on local rivalry and banter as opposed to deep religious roots which barely even affects anyone in modern day society.

 

of course rangers fans have some gooduns in among them.....but we also have a small minority of eejits.
rfc came away from tommy's funeral with a lot of dignity and respect for the way smith and mccoist conducted themselves.
its a sad thought but.....in the next few years there may well be quite a few old firm funerals due to the age some of our old bhoys are reaching....i for one hope that the celtic fanbase and celticfootballclub are as forthcoming with their sympathy and empathy as rfc were on tommys demise.
i would finally remind you all of the ambulance chasing banner the rfc fans displayed at celtic park...for me it besmirched everything rfc did as a club when tommy passed away.

You know one of the most moving things ive ever seen was outside celtic park when his procession stopped and his mum got out and there were all those fans singing his name and that will live with me forever . This man showed that its all bs the problem is that places exist like larkhall and harthill were they still live in the dark ages and so long as they knuckle draggers are allowed to continue with their bile then rangers will always have a problem and while i applaud them for the efforts they have made to erradicate it they did help feed the monster with their open policy of not signing catholics and I for one am proud that my club never descriminated agasint anyone
