I think you need a guy like him. Bit of a character to help make the place a better environment to work in.

Never write them off til they do something or rather don't.

But the initial gut reaction to this one is the usual, there it is job for the boys.

Do we know if it's a temporary thing along with Martin and Shaun? Or is he now gonna be camped in and enforced upon the next 4 managers too?

Time will tell of course and it's not always a bad thing that ex players drift back towards their first clubs. It's just bad when your staffing is vastly made up of only these people, even more so when they have zero experience as a coach elsewhere first (not the case here of course).

Good luck, first game was a positive one for all the new staff in place. Let's see what's next.

Agree, but at least Maloney and Fotheringham have cut their teeth elsewhere rather than just landed a job off the back of being Celtic men with no experience.

Yep Maloney and this fella has the experience needed to earn the job they are hired to do.

Fotheringham adds that toughness to the team. The badly needed ugly side of the game that we have been lacking for years.

He played 3 games here. It’s hardly the old pals act.

The majority of teams have ex players on their staff in certain capacities. It’s a good thing.

    Anyway it’s likely temporary.

    Have no issue with this.

Maybe be Marco Rose's assistant given his expertise in the German language..

Yeah this about sums it up, as the guys also saying, it's not always a bad thing.
Often clubs do lean on former players and guys who grew up supporting/local. It's natural.

But they either need to be true exceptions of great talent or have cut their cloth somewhere so they actually bring some experience to the job and we aren't just letting the place be an echo chamber of coaches.

I'd not overly be against a Fotheringham appointment even under a new manager (let's pretend Knutsen) so long as Knutsen can bring his own key staff (a number two and perhaps one or two others he enjoys working with) to complement the already established talent at the club - which ideally would be more than we currently have.

Our players seem to be in their shell a lot this season. Muted, passive with little drive. A character like this is exactly what's needed I think. A bit like a Broony in the dressing room.

I trust MoN and Shaun to know what this guy will bring.

Just wish we had AJ and CCV fully fit as they're just the kind of players that could thrive in a more aggressive environment.

Not totally true about having to he exceptions of great talent or going elsewhere first. Just go have a look through the PL and their staff and some of the names.

But I absolutely agree the new manager needs his own guys in. Maloney will go back to his role and there might be another role for Fotheringham.

From the press conference I assumed O'Neill had asked him to come in rather than the club.

Decent coaching credentials and at the very least, he'll lift the mood. Not against it.

Callum McGregor has hailed his Celtic reunion with Mark Fotheringham, following his side's 3-1 defeat of Rangers in the Premier Sports Cup.

    Celtic reunion
The captain spent the 2013/14 season at EFL side Notts County, where he scored 14 goals in 41 appearances, shortly before his first-team breakthrough at Celtic. Also at the club at that time was ex-Celtic player Mark Fotheringham, who has returned to the club as a coach under Martin O'Neill.

"It's been brilliant," said McGregor, on linking up with Fotheringham 12 years on. "As soon as he walked through the door, I spoke to him briefly on Monday night. Then, I saw him at the training ground on Tuesday, and it was all smiles.

"We had an amazing time down the road, and Fozzy was someone who really looked after me in a critical period of my career. So, big smiles, big hugs, and I'm so glad that we can go and deliver on the pitch as well."
