Is it now okay in 2025 to say you support Celtic, (the Republic Of) Ireland and........GASP........ "Northern" Ireland? Or does that go against everything about supporting Celtic/Ireland? I've got my own thoughts on this but would love to hear other peoples.

Why would a die hard Celtic fan want to support Northern Ireland?

Why not? Various Celtic players and managers have played for Northern Ireland at some level, why can't fans like both too? And like the Republic too for that matter?

    I am an Irish man.

Im not a "northern irishman", nor a "republic of Irishman". Im an Irishman.

I dont support either. Supporting either, or both, in the OP's suggestion; is legitimating the prevailing ignorance from both sides' governing bodies.

Of course the FAI had reason to split from the all ireland body in the 20's. But maintaining both bodies at this point is tantamount to sectarianism imo; from BOTH sides.

Its in the political and financial interests of a small clutch of twats from both bodies to keep an all ireland side a 100 year old memory.

Supporting NI might imply that it is a legitimate state. Whilst you might in other contexts have to accept the political reality of partition as a matter of practical necessity, treating NI as a distinct nation to which you owe some kind of allegiance appears to accept or even endorse its existence as a state. The general idea most would hold to is that it isn't a legitimate state of this kind - it represents the Irish nation cleft in twain for the purposes of maintaining colonial control over Ireland.

I'm not telling you not to support them, btw, but that's the argument against doing so as I see it.

It's okay as long as you wave a 4 provinces flag and loudly say things like "I hear there's to be a referendum".

I think it's more a northern Irish person would be able to support all three with relative ease.
But a republican Irishman would surely fundamentally go against their beliefs of a unified Ireland and their refusal to concede the six counties to the British, so supporting northern Ireland, I'd imagine is a bit like accepting the occupation and accepting/supporting a British entity.

That doesn't mean all "southern" Irish folk would be that against the idea of the north, but I imagine it's pretty small.

And that also, not to put words in folks mouths, doesn't mean that "southern" Irish folk don't like folk from the north etc, they can and do obviously, but the sporting entity of acknowledging the north I imagine would be weird.

It would be the same as Celtic - Scottish fans supporting GB in the Olympics (or more so the football team back at the London games), as the idea of supporting Britain in any capacity goes against our desire to be an independent country (in politics and in sporting reference).

But that's all broadstroking and stereotyping the support.

Many within both scenarios will have unique views and dynamics that means they will support both. But it's surely gonna be few and far between - outside of the named players/managers who are born in Northern Ireland and naturally call it home and are proud, but also would clearly support unification and all that too.

So, aye, weird if you're not in that sort of unique position.
