Yep McGregor being isolated in there now makes it to easy to stop him and us playing.

As many have said the simple solution is to play a 4231 and give him some support.

Previously I thought he needed help defensively but he now needs it from an attacking point every bit as much.

The balance of the midfield is all wrong. I don't think any of the midfielders we have actually suit the current system.

McGregor, Bernardo and Engels all look better suited to a double pivot.

Nygren is a 10, arguably so is Hatate.

Ironically the only natural number 8 is McGregor, who hasn't played there in about 6 years

Still lacking a midfield destroyer. I feel like there is still a bit of an imbalance in there in that we have quite technical players but I think we lack aggression and real mobility.

I don't even think its purely down to the lack of certain types of players in there. Part of it is. A big part.

But also when I watch the midfield I don't see any sort of fluidity. It looks so disjointed.

Saw a comment on YouTube earlier that said we passed back to Schmeichel 39 times today alone and that there "were times it was easy to pass forward than pass back" and couldn't agree more.

I don't believe that Rodgers is asking the players to do that everytime. The players need to take some responsibility and grow some baws. They have ability. I have no idea whats going on.

The way we use our midfield is confusing we don't pass forward dont pass quick just tap tap tap

Rodgers saying he doesnt tell the team to pass sideways and back may be only half the message. No manager is going to tell their players to only pass sideways and back.

If hes also telling them its imperative to retain possession and only attack in certain patterns when it becomes available then its going to lend itself to this kind of football thats lacking intent.

It was a criticism last season after Christmas as well. He piped up as Taylor was getting it stinking and said we were "changing the point of attack" by going backwards..

I agree i don't think he's saying constantly look back when you're 30 yards from the opposition goal from freekicks saying how can you get it back to Schmeichel..

Ralston and Hatate are really bad for it though, no just them but they are big offenders for this pish. There's definitely a lack of bravery and confidence right through the squad currently..

Ang didn't have a problem with the midfield when he was boss it was quick and defence splitting passes onto the wingers and most of those midfielders are still at the club .
It's all down to Rogers * tactics and slow build up play and would rather he left just now that's 3 games now it's been appalling.

It's all down to our attack being toothless IMO.

We still dominated the ball today, we just had no cutting edge in attack.

Still not linked to a single defensive midfielder.
Manager clearly happy with what he has.
    Shocking.

Absolutely not, midfield is at least as big an issue as front 3.
    One directly impacts the other.
Our walking, negative, tippy tappy, sideways midfield are killing the pace of games, making us so easy to play against and limiting time / space for attackers.
It's not a coincidence that a very long list of attackers have struggled post Bayern and the midfield is essentially the same.

You’re blaming the manager in the initial post. If you think Rodgers is happy with this situation, you’ve not been paying attention. He can’t even get a replacement for his first choice Striker, his first choice right winger and you think the incompetent * working out deals can sign a * to play in the middle of the park where we are pretty stacked?

    But, aye. Let’s blame Rodgers.

We are stacked with all the same type of midfielders, it's a real issue.
So yes, I am criticising Rogers for at least not making a defensive / dynamic / box to box midfielder a priority.
We haven't been linked with anyone or failed to buy anyone, so feels like a fair assumption to make that he is happy with midfield.
The recent performances suggests he's wrong.

Yes, we also need a much better front 3.

But the overall disaster that is this window, that's not Rogers fault.

You’re missing the point. Rodgers can’t even get the board to buy players that he actually needs, in positions where we are incredibly short and you somehow expect him to magically convince the * to give him a defensive midfielder?

    Gies peace, man.

First time in a long time we've lacked the players, or they've lacked the form, to get through tough defensive blocks. We absolutely OWN possession and it's all around the opposition half, but we do ABSOLUTELY NOTHING with it... It goes up, sideways, back and forth without any real threat or penetration.

Tierney may be s better player than Taylor, but he got up the wing with energy and troubled teams for the entire game. Ralston isn't sharp enough (yet?) to fill the loss of Johnson. Maeda is either unsettled or still adapting to the change, Jota and Kuhn out, strikeforce is currently a dangerously unknown quantity which Rodgers has so far refused to engage with, our central midfielders appear demotivated and soft under pressure.

There's a horrible funk over the squad right now that NEEDED to be sorted in this window - a good few out and even more fresh, invigorating players in was essential to renewing the drive. We did neither thing successfully...
