Royal Antwerp winger Michel-Ange Balikwisha is keen to join Celtic this summer amid growing interest in his signature late in the window.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed that the 24-year-old


The winger came “very close” to joining Brendan Rodgers’ side last summer before an untimely injury saw the move fall through, although the interest has lingered.

Football Insider exclusively revealed in June that Celtic are well-placed to sign Balikwisha after being given encouragement by Antwerp’s financial issues


A move in January had emerged as a possibility, but they opted not to pursue it so soon after his return to fitness, but that opportunity has now risen again.



Football Insider revealed in December that Celtic could reignite their interest in Balikwisha and scouts have been keeping a close eye on his progress this season.



While they are also pursuing other targets, negotiations are believed to have taken place with Antwerp after the clubs’ discussions last summer.

O’Rourke explained that the winger is keen to play Champions League football at Parkhead and a deal remains very much on the cards for Celtic.

“They were close to signing Balikwisha last summer,” he told Football Insider.


An injury he picked up in a game for Royal Antwerp put paid to that move, and then Celtic had to look elsewhere in the transfer market.

“Celtic know all about him, they’ve done an extensive scouting job on him over the last 12 months at least and he’s definitely still on their radar.

“Maybe they could reignite their interest in Balikwisha.


The player himself is interested in the move away from Antwerp to Celtic.



The opportunity to play Champions League football is very appealing to him in that respect, so there’s no doubt there’s a deal to be done.

“It came very close to happening last summer before that injury.

“There have been negotiations between the two clubs as there were last summer, so if they don’t land their other targets, Balikwisha could be an alternative.”

 

Just seems to be his side pushing for the move rather than us, hopefully stays that way.

I think that’s when we dropped the interest, with his team being so public about it, anything from our side or at least media that we know are a good source for us have not said much since.

Is Balikwisha any closer to signing for Celtic?
I feel as if I've been speaking about Michel-Ange Balikwisha for about 10 years now.

He is, he's the new Mathias Kvistgaarden



Look, Celtic have been interested in him in the past.

They clearly had an interest early in the window.

There was a lot of rumours on Thursday from people saying this is nearly done.

I spoke to someone in Belgium who covers Antwerp and doesn't think it's at that stage, but wasn't ruling it out.

He still felt there was a distance between valuations that can obviously change quickly


Something tells me that might happen down the line, and I feel as if I've said that a million times, but it's just not going away.

He's not going anywhere else as well.

I think for Antwerp's situation, they have a player who's in in the last year of his contract.

And you don't want to let it go too long.


You want to understandably get the maximum value for him, and I suppose it's that game of at what stage do you say that offer we do accept.

I'm led to believe the player is very, very keen to come to Celtic.

We'll see what happens with that one.

I've just got a funny feeling come the end of the window and it might be the final day that Balikwisha will be a Celtic player.

 

Our recruitment is not fit for purpose all the wingers in Europe and is this is the best we can do another squad filler and again we are going to be running about at the last minute looking for signings and paying over the odds for mediocre players it's * depressing.

Rumour has been around so long there must be something in it but the fee isn't that big to the point even we wouldn't baulk at it. If we wanted him that much we could have done this deal ages ago.

He's obviously the fallback that has risen to top of the list due to our usual * about with other targets.

 

Before all the latest incoming cryptic messages for him, rumours were circulating he'll only 100% sign if we qualify. Could be pish, but if rodgers wants him he'll wait.
