I woke up this morning to see a story doing the rounds on Celtic twitter and several other social media claiming that a “trusted source in Japan” alleges that Daizen Maeda is about to leave Celtic and Taisei Miyashiro is being lined up as his replacement.

Unfortunately, this is yet another case of mistranslation, misunderstanding, and in some case, sensationalist lying."

 

Let’s hope this is the case… far too much to do in attacking positions without losing our best attacker. We’re threadbare as is …

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers is 'very confident' of keeping Daizen Maeda at the club this summer.

The Japanese forward enjoyed a terrific 2024/25 season, during which he contributed to 44 goals across 51 appearances in all competitions.


Maeda's current contract is due to expire in two years, and talks are continuing regarding an extension: "There have been discussions going on in the background," said Rodgers. "I don't have any updates on it.



"I don't know of any developments on that."

The Celtic boss was then asked how confident he is of keeping Maeda at the club: "I'm very confident of that, yeah, as can be," he replied.

A versatile frontman, Maeda particularly impressed when he played as a central striker last term.

This campaign, however, he has started Celtic's opening two league fixtures on the left wing.


I've always said that he's a player that can play in there," said Rodgers, when asked whether he plans to use Maeda as a number nine at any point.

"We've had other options in the past.

"He's shown when he's gone in there that he can play well, so that's always an option for me."

 

Problem is if he doesn’t sign new contract next year where if as a fan I wouldn’t begrudge a move him well next he’s only got year left which won’t recoup a substantial fee that the board want surely we can get him to sign new contract and give him a gents agreement that his move will come …. Any new contract will be signed after the window, his agent will be making sure of that

 

Who cares. We just hoard the money anyway. We've not bothered our * replacing the last 2 guys that left so id rather just keep him

 

If we sell Maeda, especially for peanuts, we need to find out who the undercover Hun is on the board, given all that's happened (or not) this summer.

I genuinely think there would be riots if we sell any other of the starting 11. Even our board can’t be that tone death.

The fees mean * all at this point, we could get 40m fot Maeda and it would sit there the same as 40 quid.
