He has a significant influence but not a controlling one. He would rely on shareholder and board alignment to force through any decision, he cannot do it alone.

    Absolutely.

He cannot do it himself though, he is reliant on shareholder alignment and the only value of that is it allows representation on the board. Where I differ from others is I believe Desmond is a passive investor, not a controlling one - that's what I see the facts point toward. I believe Lawwell is the most influential person in the running of the club because Desmond has little say or interest in Celtic - he just lets the board get on with it. I've pointed out that he can't even be bothered to attend board meetings himself.

Desmond does not have the shareholding to decide alone on any big decision, he needs the boardroom and in order to have the boardroom in this manner, he needs to have significant allies in terms of shareholding.

Celtic Da Weekly From Celtic underground

Now the whisper is that Dermot Desmond only wants Rodgers to be the voice of the club. Fine, but then Rodgers has to be equipped to answer absolutely everything about the club, and as we saw in his most recent press conference, he clearly isn’t. The communication vacuum is so vast it’s sucking in every daft rumour going - including, tragically, this column.

And if the rumour is true, here’s the bigger question: why is Dermot Desmond (a man with just 34.7% of the club, remember) allowed to call the shots like this? Or is it actually his son quietly taking on more power despite not owning a controlling stake?

The last time anyone from behind the curtain addressed the fans was the day Rodgers came back. Before that? Dom McKay unveiling Ange. And in between? Silence. When Lennon was sacked? They hid. When McKay was punted? They hid. When Rodgers left the first time? They hid. If only we were entering the International Hide and Seek Championship instead of the Champions League, we’d have the trophy wrapped up before the group stage

At this point, I’m convinced our recruitment team of MicNic and Chris McKay aren’t just slow, they’re trapped. Somewhere deep beneath Celtic Park there’s a locked room, no windows, no phone signal, just a flickering bulb and a fax machine from 1996. Every so often, a scout slides another name under the door, but by the time it reaches daylight, the player’s retired and taken up selling CBD oil on Instagram.

The fans talk about “missing out” on players like it’s a bad break-up. It’s not. This is the slow death of a marriage between the fans and the club, the hollow stares over breakfast, the silent car journeys, the quiet agreement that nothing’s ever going to change. Other clubs are out there falling in love, making plans, building futures. We’re just sat on the sofa in our dressing gown, eating cereal from the box, wondering where it all went wrong. We’re just going through the motions for the kids.

And when the window finally closes, there won’t be anger. Not really. Just that numb, empty acceptance you feel when you realise this is as good as it gets. We’ll shuffle back into the stadium with the same squad, the same flaws, and the same faces we’ve been watching decay in real time. Because that’s the thing about hope: you can lose it slowly, you can lose it suddenly, but once it’s gone, all you’re left with is the silence.

Back in the day, we were told to prepare for life in the slow lane. Are we now being gently herded towards life on the hard shoulder, waiting for the AA while the rest of Europe flies past?

It could be a reason for hoarding cash but I'm not convinced. You would imagine we'd be an attractive proposition for someone, currently.

Desmond will be passing his shares to junior. There is absolutely no reason not to strengthen on the pitch no matter what is going on in the background.. its just pure negligence.

There are rumours that Ross would be far more active with the club.

As the board are being stupid * and not supporting the current manager in the transfer market, I hope they are looking for a possible replacement manager when Brendan finally loses the plot and tells them to poke it.

Rodgers doesn’t help himself … he got the board to spend 17 million between trusty and Engels … and is now bench them basically saying they are no good enough would the board sanction any transfer over 6m on a Rodgers suggestion ?

He didn’t get the board to spend £17m on Engels and Trusty. It’s well documented that we could have signed Engels weeks before for £8m. We had to overpay because it was coming towards the end of the transfer window.

There is no doubt that he has a blind spot for Scales and most of us believe Trusty is being unfairly treated. That doesn’t mean he isn’t worth the £6m we paid for him though.

If you can’t back the manager then what is the point of keeping him?

That shouldnt matter to any proper board.

It isnt the role of the board to sanction or not sanction a signing based on how good they think the manager is doing. It is the role of the board to have a strategy to improve the club. That strategy includes buying and selling players. If they dont trust Rodgers to spend over 6m quid they should sack him and find someone they trust. Deciding not to improve a team because Rodgers isnt playing Engels or Trusty is not sensible.
