Still scouting players we were linked with 2 years ago. Got to sufficiently monitor them before we bid. If clubs know we've got £750K left in this summers warchest we might lose our position of strength in the negotiations.

 

Not sure I agree with that at all. Look at the following transfer windows we had.

scenario A -

Yang Hyun – £2.0m

Marco Tilio – £1.5m

Maik Nawrocki – £4.3m

Gustaf Lagerbielke – £3.0m

Luis Palma – £3.5m

Total - £14.3m

OR

Scenerio B

Idah and engels approx 20m.

In my mind, idah and engles haven't hit the heights we hoped for, but they both contributed to last season and are young enough to get better.

Every player in scenario A was a waste of time. Yang will never cut the grade. Scenario A was complete was of £14m+

£3m will occasionally get you a good player these days but with every passing year it get more risky. We have to move with the times and part of that is accepting that £3m will rarely get you a player of standard and it's riskier again for a £2m or £1.5m punt

 

Yeah the scouting has to be spot on, so if the board want to continue down this route thats were they should be spending more money.

From your list we got our money back on Lagerbielke, we have a deal to get our money back on Tillio, not sure what option to buys are on Nawrocki amd Palma but guess will roughly break even, and we'd get our money back on Yang so although they havnt worked out for us they've not been a total waste of money. And for what it's worth i think Nawrocki and possibly even Lagerbielke would have been a success if Rodgers didnt have such a hard on for Liam Scales.

On the other hand, of our 4 most expensive signings in the last 10 years Jullien, Edouard, Idah and Engels the only 1 you can call value for money at present is Edouard and he was much less of a risk because he was here on loan 1st. So too were Jota ans CCV our 5th and 6th most expensive signings in the last 10 years.

Don't get me wrong im not defending the board, i * despise the tory *. Im simply saying spending more money on players isnt necessarily the solution.

It should be getting spent on scouting, if the board aren't willing to spend big on players then they should be ensuring we have the absolute best scouting department possible, but like everything else they want to do it cheaply and do the bare minimum bcoz essentially they have absolutely no clue how to run a modern football club.

Lot of speculation and confirmation bias there. Nawrocki and Lagerbielke didn't show themselves to be any better than Scales here. Lagerbielke had a nightmare truth be told and the manager probably felt he was too slow and dwelt too long on the ball to be effective here. Nawrocki had a dodgy start and the injury issues didn't help.

We lost about £1m on Lagerbielke. We may break even on Tilio, remains to be seen. We made £6m on Edouard. I think we would get close to our money back on Engels if not a profit - Atalanta are rumoured to be admirers. Idah we might make a loss. Jullien I thought was a decent player but a bad injury and a new manager not fancying him saw his end.

You seem to adopt the same outlook as Lawwell - that we should be paralysed by fear, that we should let a bad transfer never have us return again. We have £80m in the bank - we can afford to get a few big transfers wrong if we do.

To a degree it does. How many good players have we walked away from because we didn't like the price tag?

It's easier find at Maeda or MOR quality players at £8/9m than it is at £1-3m, which is extremely different.

Excluding free agents, the last 10 players we have bought below £3m are:

Really a bunch of meh, some decent backup options and a load of flops. We'll see about the three new lads this season. I don't have an issue with our scouting, we seem to have no problem identifying talent, we do seem to have a massive issue in securing that talent at a price the selling club deems reasonable so much so that we generally walk away and going for the guy we can get for £2m or whatever that likely won't move the dial at all.

Idah and Engels haven't justified their price tag to date and I'd expect better from them but they have still contributed positively as a whole. We shouldn't be scared to spend money because a few big money signings didn't turn out to be our main men instantly.

I think youre absolutely bang on the money for what it's worth.

 

I agree with the last paragraph that we shouldn't be scared to spend money because of previous signings, but that's an incredibly generous summation of Idah and Engels. They're never going to be our main men , two painfully average footballers.
