I don't think we can use VVD as an example here. That was 11 year ago.

Also he'd be going for far more than £5m aftse 2 years of consecutive football. If we had a 19 year old CB who'd played that, what would we be asking.

So we should wait until the big clubs have reported interest before we make a move, just to make sure he's good?

    Aye, that'll work.

Albeit it 9 million is a lot. He has all the attributes to become a top defender if memory served we were looking at Pavlovic (Both similiar) few years back & look where he is now. This young man has had Champions League experience & is playing for a team similar to ourselves who dominate their domestic league. I reckon 6-7 million would be fine although I can see why its also a gamble. In today's transfer market for a young prospect who is highly rated & who is playing for a team like Red Star that's what we have to pay.

Look at it this way, if we had a 17 year old as good as him who broke into the first team we would be looking for that kind of money.

He is being tracked by some of the biggest clubs in Europe, Red Star know 9 million is nothing to them.

it’s a massive gamble for us, it’s absolutely is but he is one of the most highly rated U18 in world football.

Remember when Ronny was trying to sign Ødegaard and * were saying he wasn’t worth the money and wages.

He could turn out as good or be a flop we will never know until we take that chance.

I do laugh at this as well.

I'd rather chance it for £6-7m if we could get him at that, than regret it. We paid that for Trusty and I'd probably rather risk it on up and coming "wonderkids" tbh.

If we had a 17 year old centre back talent with first team appearances we would want about £20 million. They are entitled to ask what they want.

If we've truly went in at £5.1m, then fair *.

Now if they sit tight on £9m - I can understand the doubts for sure.
Personally if he's scouted properly and we think he's gonna be another £25m player in 2-3 seasons, then we should get closer to their asking price and make the deal happen.

But I'll not pretend to know if he's actually good for that or not.

What will annoy me is, if we've went in at £5.1m and we * around all summer with 250k here or there, then get to the last week of the window and scramble about and end up paying £6-7m for another Trusty type, it'll just be disappointing to waste that time and effort then over pay for a panic signing anyway.

Hows your bottle recruitment team, how much do you trust your judgement?
High risk, but very high reward signing.

If he is our main target, please just don't feckin lose him for a £1M or so - just do it or don't.

I'm no saying we shouldn't but I just can't see us paying 9 mill odd for a 17 year old centre half..

that market has changed a lot past few years.
He would been 4 million players 4 years ago.
    But things gone mental.

He was constantly in and out of their match day squad last season...if theres 9 millions quids worth of potential there why is he not at least a bench warmer every game especially in the Serbian League. If we can punt the likes of Welsh and Lagerbielke to help fund it then fair enough

Could be that they were managing his minutes. You can't expect a 17 year old to play every match.

I'd expect a player i value at 9 mill to be on the bench at least. And at that price we cant afford to manage his minutes if we got him. I'd want him competing for that spot alongside CCV

Jusr because they want 9m doesn't mean they'll get it.

If that's true and we've bid that much then we must be serious. Interesting to see how this goes.

It would suggest that sadly we aren't targeting a left sided CB tho if we spend that much on the right side.

There is also this, do we trust the (severely lacking and limited) recruitment team or not?
If we identify this sort of talent, that need to ball up to it and convince the money men.

If they can't do that and/or the money men don't trust the recruitment team, then that's a bigger conversation the board (are long over due) needing to have.

Few players at that age would manage those sort of minutes and consistently put in the performances needed to play that amount of games.

Our fans, along with others, need to remember this with basically any players under 23, more so under 21, they're still very much developing.

Guys like Lamal at Barcelona are an anomaly.
Celtic on the other hand tend to go the complete opposite of just not giving any player any time at that age :56: a happy medium would be nice.

He's also 18 tomorrow if that helps anyone and for his game time last season he didn't get in a squad at all til game 12 of their season. He was only just 17 as that league season would have started and it was thus his debut season.

Once he got his debut, looks like he only missed 4 games.
2 randomly in the middle of the season and last two games due to an injury.
Mix of starting and sub appearances, but does look like he cracked in to the squad and remained in the match day squad from there on out at 17 that's a great amount of game time.
For perspective I think Welsh made his debut at 21(or just shortly before he was 21).
This lad is 4 years ahead of Welsh was.

    I didnt say that.

I said the fact that no big clubs, who have far bigger scouting set ups and vastly superior scouts haven't flagged this boy up.

Given our own scouting dept is actually quite amateurish, i find it difficult to believe that we and a clutch of English league sides, out of all the clubs in Europe, have spotted this wunderkind out of pure happenstance.

Someone has recommended this boy, directly to us, with his parent club looking for an astronomical fee, and that always is a red flag for me.

Someone is pushing this kid towards the exit, either an agent or his club, or both, looking for a payday.

Which of course they should get. But 9m is a joke.

Not unusual these days that. Unusual for the team that’s asking, the record fee they have ever got is still Dejan Stankovic to Lazio in 2004 for £12m.

Us bidding that much off the bat and what they want, we both clearly think he has something special
