ROSS DOOHAN says he can be Scotland’s No 1 — despite being Celtic’s No 3.

The Hoops academy product returned to the club from Aberdeen this week after three years away

Doohan answered Steve Clarke’s SOS to make his Scotland debut in the friendly win in Liechtenstein.

But he doesn’t want to be remembered as a one-cap wonder and believes he can keep his spot in the squad, despite having Kasper Schmeichel and Viljami Sinisalo ahead of him in the pecking order at Parkhead.

Doohan said: “I believe I could do it. I need to back myself and we’ll see what happens in the future.

“I always thought there was a chance of Scotland when I played the few games I did for Aberdeen last year.

I got a good amount of game time last season and I thought it would put me in good stead.”

Doohan interrupted a family holiday in Turkiye to help dig his national team out of a hole.

The 27-year-old said: “When I got the call to meet up with the squad for the Liechtenstein game midway through the summer I just dropped everything I could.

“I packed the case then got the first flightback to Glasgow so I could meet up with the squad.

It’s given me that drive and I don’t want it to be my one and only cap.

“I want to get called up more and hopefully I’ll get more caps in the future.”

Doohan got his Scotland chance with Craig Gordon, Angus Gunn, Zander Clark, Liam Kellyand Robby McCrorie all crocked and kid Cieran Slicker under fire after his nightmare debut against Iceland.

The former Under-21 cap raced from his sun lounger to make his bow in Vaduz as Scotland claimed a 4-0 win

Clarke’s men open up their World Cupqualifying campaign in the autumn with away games against Denmark and Belarus in early September.

Doohan said: “Any game for Scotland would be exciting to be involved in.

“Getting called up for your country is a great honour and I’m looking forward to the World Cup qualifiers.

“If I get called up, I’d be absolutely buzzing.”

Doohan will replace Scott Bain in the Hoops squad following his move to Falkirk.

But he isn’t looking at being third pick under Brendan Rodgers.

He added: “Yeah, I’ve got to back myself.

“I’ve got to go out and train and work hard, then I have to grasp any opportunity I get.

I need to train hard during the week to be ready for the game at the weekend, whether I’m playing or not.

“That’s life as a goalkeeper, you always need to be ready.

“I feel like competition’s healthy everywhere.

If you’re competing with people, that’ll bring out the best in you.

I’m looking to come in, push on and hopefully make a stamp on the squad here.”
