It was the desperate last minute attempt at persuading him to sign up, appearance vs Villa that annoys me about it.

    It’s just so Celtic.

Not so much as a player is it a blow for me, I think he is a born goalscorer and from what I seen doesn’t seem much else and that won’t necessarily translate to stepping up a level.

But it’s another example that the youth team will be looking at and concluding what they do here doesn’t matter at all for getting an opportunity. And he’s got a long line of guys behind him as examples.

But with guys like Vata leaving and playing and developing, Bosun Lawal getting a good move after Loan (not shined afterwards to be fair but played more senior football than he would here), they’ll look to that instead.

Even Ben Doak. The one example I think we were trying everything right, and just got a decision we didn’t want after Klopp phoned him personally. But it’s worked for Doak that.

We still point to Calmac and Forrest for examples of academy players nailing down that first team place. Two guys who will have been doing so here most of the youth players earliest memories of Celtic

Such a poor move by him, he’ll be loaned out to lower league. May as well of just signed for a League 1 club.

Nothing to do with first team opportunities and all to do with money . They jump ship to clubs where they have even less of a pathway to first team football for the £££. There is absolutely a culture in our youth setup where the aspiration is to get a half decent move South at the first opportunity because it's extremely lucrative and these boys haven't earned a penny yet . Won't change unless we start flinging 5 year 5-10 grand a week contracts at teenagers.

We will never be able to compete on salary with EPL clubs but I think if we were able to show a pathway to young players that would go someway to at least giving them one reason to stay. Weve had the league sown up for months watching several player go through the motions and we still cant find space for young talent to get a few games. We dont even seem to have a loan strategy to ensure these guys get minutes while keeping them at the club. I see no argument that we making for young players to stay at celtic other than hoping they are celtic fans. Cant blame them at all for moving on at firsg opportunity.

Striker probably the hardest to break through here. Unless you're really something special.

He certainly won't break through at West ham, either.

Give it a year or two and we’ll be getting him mixed up with Dominic Cummings.

Only time he’ll ever even see the West Ham bench is on his introductory tour…

I don’t know much about this fella but it is very concerning that we cannot hold onto our home bred young players, do these kids feel they have no future at Celtic?
We seem to splash silly money 4 to 6 million quid on squad players but the lack of home grown players breaking into the squad is a real concern, someone at the club needs to adress this problem.

https://www.hammers.news/transfer-n...west-ham-eye-second-big-brendan-rodgers-blow/Frank McAvennie slams Celtic over striker move as West Ham eye second big Brendan Rodgers blow

Former West Ham and Celtic hero has mixed messages for his old clubs over Daniel Cummings as the Londoners eye second blow to Brendan Rodgers.

The love between Frank McAvennie and both West Ham and Celtic was such that he played for both clubs twice during his goal-laden career

With nearly 100 goals in the claret and blue of the Hammers and the green and white hoops of Celtic, McAvennie is well placed to talk about what it takes to be a striker in the east end of London and the east end of Glasgow.

The man who made scoring goals look easy is uniquely placed on events unfolding between West Ham and the Bhoys right now.

West Ham have not had much luck with strikers in recent years.

It’s not for the want of trying – the Hammers have signed 56 of them in the last 15 seasons.

Making the right call has been rare at West Ham, though.

Now the Irons have turned to 19-year-old Celtic star Daniel Cummings in the hope that is all about to change.

When Celtic academy graduate Cummings was spotted at West Ham for the club’s final home game of the season, it was clear Brendan Rodgers had failed to change some hearts and minds.

The Hoops’ hot prospect forward had looked set to sign for the Hammers back in January.

West Ham held talks about signing Cummings both in a pre-contract agreement and on a permanent £500k deal ahead of him becoming a free agent this summer.

Celtic’s manager was furious at the prospect of losing free-scoring Cummings to West Ham.

Rodgers raged at Cummings’ agent over the West Ham talks and he pleaded with Cummings and his representatives to show patience and loyalty by staying at Celtic.

Rodgers even handed Cummings his debut in the Champions League against Aston Villa in what has turned out to be a futile bid to persuade him his future was with the Scottish giants.

It has been confirmed Cummings has passed a medical, a paltry £250k training fee has been set and the Celtic starlet will become a West Ham player on July 1st.

Hammers News moved to clarify rumours about Cummings that have been circulating at Celtic and West Ham.

It’s been claimed the deadly finisher is giving up being part of the Celtic first team to join West Ham’s Academy side.

It has been confirmed that is not the case and that Cummings has been assured a place in Graham Potter’s first team squad as part of West Ham’s youthful rebuild.

Now McAvennie has slammed Celtic over the striker move as West Ham eye a second big Rodgers blow.

Cummings has bagged 30 goals for Celtic’s B team this season.

It must be remembered the side are competing in the Scottish pyramid, so those goals are coming against senior professionals, not other young players.

And McAvennie says Celtic should have done more to try and keep Cummings out of West Ham’s clutches.

Meanwhile he has a message for the player himself about how to endear himself to Hammers fans next season.

He’s a great signing for West Ham,” McAvennie said on X.

“In my opinion Celtic should have kept him.

“Give 100 per cent and the (West Ham) fans will love you.”

If he was a centre mid he would be looking at McGregor, Hatate, Engels, Bernardo and MacCowan ahead of him. Maybe even Schlupp as well and weve got Kwon out on loan. If he was a centre half he would be competing against CCV, Trusty, Scales, Welsh, Rocki, and Lager. Besides being a good enough left back to back up Tierney if Taylor goes, I dont see any route into the team for a youth player at the moment.

I agree though, I cant see him breaking through at West Ham. But if he gets loaned out to a decent league one side he is still getting a lot more experience than he would in the Celtic B team.

Aye I get that but whens the last time a striker broke through here?

We've got more recent evidence for CM, winger, full backs or even keeper.

Just think that striker is so important at any club its actually rare to see a youth product nowadays step up and score 20-30.

Creaney and Burchill are after him. Aitchison too although it's a stretch to say he broke through.

Craig Beattie and Burchill prob only ones in the last 30 years. And its pushing it to say they were successful. Journey men after a bright start

Burchill lit the place up his debut season and the next one. Then got caught up in the glamour and money and nose dived. Had a career but real shame as he had much more potential.

He was also at Hearts before the huns but came to us at 17. Made his debut 2 years later.

Bit unfair to give them all the credit for his development. Anyway still the last striker to make any sort of impact coming from our underage teams, and that was over 20 years ago.
