Celtic have told third-choice goalkeeper Scott Bain that he can leave the club on a free transfer.

Heading into the final 12 months of his agreement, the Parkhead club have agreed to cut the deal short and let the 33-year-old go.

Signed in 2018, Bain made 69 appearances for the Celtic first team, his last game a 3-2 win over St Mirren in May last year.

Now third in the pecking order behind Kasper Schmeichel and Viljami Sinisalo the 33-year-old will now go in search of first team football elsewhere

Celtic can confirm that goalkeeper Scott Bain has left the club after over seven years as a Celt.

During that time, the 33-year-old has won seven league titles, four League Cups and three Scottish Cups.

Scott initially joined Celtic on loan from Dundee in January 2018, and made his debut in a Glasgow derby at Ibrox in March when Odsonne Edouard’s late goal gave a 10-man Celtic team a momentous 3-2 victory, on a day when the Hoops keeper played a vital part in the win.

At the end of that season, he made the move a permanent one and he has made a total of 78 appearances for the club, while he also gained three international caps for Scotland.

Scott said: “I am really sad, of course, to be leaving the club but I am so thankful, too, for everything the club has given me.

“I have enjoyed my time at Celtic massively and it has been a huge honour to be part of the biggest and best club in the country.

“I would like to thank the Gaffer and all the other managers I’ve worked with, my many team-mates over the years and all the staff at Celtic.

“I’ve made some great friends at Celtic and will always be supporting the club in everything it does.

“The Celtic fans are the best around and I thank them for all the support I have been given by them too.

“I wish the club and our supporters nothing but success for the future.”

Celtic manager, Brendan Rodgers said: “Scott has given everything to Celtic and I would like to thank him sincerely for his time at the club.

“He has been a valued member of the squad and a great team-mate, really liked and respected by us all.

“Everyone at the club wishes Scott and his family all the very best for the future.”

Been a ‘good’ pro for us, over the past few years.

Can’t recall any major howlers, when he was sporadically selected, and he’s dutifully sat on the sidelines without complaining.

Anyone got any idea where’s he going?

Mental that he's probably one of the most decorated goalkeepers in Scottish history.

Good luck to him, he's definitely good enough for a Scottish Premiership team.

He came under very odd circumstances didn't he? Had been first choice at Dundee for around 3 years, had a fall out with the manager, took a loan to Hibs, who cancelled his loan 4 weeks later and came to us because we had Gordon injured.

Hibs never played him, so were they just happy to let him go or was this a favour from Lenny?

I actually thought he was pretty decent in the 19-20 season where he took over from Gordon.

Aye good luck to him. Made a big chunk of money here, which he probably could only have dreamed about as a second choice goalkeeper at Hibernian. Will be well over a £1m he's made over the last few years.

Glad he's now in a position where he can get out and go play football with enough money behind him to take a drop in wages so that he can prolong his career. All the very best, Scott.

Did a player not go to them on loan or something in return if I remember right?

Fair play to Bain’s Celtic career though. He was good cover, got some stick for being just about good enough to win his place a couple of times and have more exposure than normal than back up keepers we’ve seen before him but never good enough to actually be 1st choice.

He put up a fight for the place, was professional throughout his time here, had some performances that got him plaudits, and was always spoke highly about as a man to have in the dressing room and as a teammate. Hoping he move somewhere first choice and has a decent career. I like him.

    Great shout that.

I’m sure the Dundee manager he fell out with and thought was a clown was Neil McCann?
