EFL Analysis understands that West Bromwich Albion are competing with Celtic to land a Scottish Under-21 international on a free transfer.

2024/25 ended in disappointing fashion for West Brom, who spent much of the season competing for a play-off spot.

After the Baggies fell away in the top-six race, they relieved Tony Mowbray of his managerial duties.

West Brom’s hunt for a new manager is still ongoing, with Ryan Mason heavily linked with the role.

But while they are yet to land a permanent replacement for Mowbray, the club are still working behind the scenes to improve their squad.

The 2025 summer transfer window will officially open for Championship clubs on June 1.

Ahead of that date, we have gained an insight into the club’s summer transfer plans.

EFL Analysis understands that West Brom are competing with Celtic to land Scottish Under-21 international Josh Mulligan.

The highly rated Dundee midfielder, who can also play wing-back, is out of contract at Dens Park this summer.

Celtic are keen to land him, but The Baggies are also holding talks with the 22-year-old.

Born in Dundee, Mulligan came up through the club’s youth ranks, enjoying some prolific spells before becoming a regular feature in the first team.

The now 22-year-old was loaned to Peterhead during the 2021/22 season, during which time his then teammate, Simon Ferry, compared the player to Gareth Bale, as per The Courier.

Ferry said: “I don’t want to put too much pressure on him but we’ve got a boy on loan from Dundee, Josh Mulligan.

“Dundee will recall him in January. He’s a Rolls-Royce like Gareth Bale – powerful, strong, direct.

“He’s a machine at that age. He wants to learn, listens to you.”

Mulligan made 29 league appearances across 2024/25, in which he provided five assists when largely operating as a right-wing-back or central midfielder.

Wonder if this means Ralston is gone? I know he can play a few positions but he wouldn't be getting gametime for us at CM or RM.

Mulligan would be a very good signing.
Powerhouse midfielder with a great engine, no softie either.

Big Tim too, so don't see him entertaining the Huns.

I like him, but I'm not sure he's any better than Ralston (I also like Tony)

Think if he was coming in it would be as a versatile option. Can play centre mid (where I think the manager would see him getting any game time)..

Would be a cheap punt to bolster the squad. Need serious quality in though..

Looks like he's quicker and more physical than anyone in centre mid for us just now, plus young enough to improve..

He wouldn't be threat to Ralston ( who I like too ). But could fill in there if needed.
Likely as a midfielder, would easily be our most combative and physical midfielder.
Would dovetail nicely with say a Brownhill in my opinion.

I'm a sucker for high work rate players. I think he'd be a useful squad player, similarly to McCowan.

    This,

Definitely worth a punt on a free transfer as long as we are bringing in quality and getting shot of the deadwood in midfield.

Need a few strong and physical players in midfield who won't take * from the opposition.

Looks an ideal squad player, and still young enough to improve. Good signing if we grab him

Would also help with the Euro registration rules somewhat if we replace him with Ralston..

Similar to what we are doing with Doohan and Bain.

Only slight fly in the ointment is his height 5ft 8

    I actually really rate him.

He has looked good anytime I've watched them. Powerful runner who others bounce off at times.

We need more Scottish players and he'd be one who I feel with his attributes could be the right, versatile type.

Sure in our games against them even last season I took serious notice, he stood out. Was * our team and the Huns at points. Surprised to hear he's only 5ft 8 actually.

I wish this one had a better source. Huns seem a more likely destination but I'd take him assuming we're going to be shifting players on.

He looks taller. But 5'8' aint bad, if true. He's a bruiser to match.

I said in the other thread a few days ago he’s one that has looked good when I’ve watched, but I don’t think he’s any better than what we have.

I dunno, as a 5th choice midfielder and alternate to Ralston then I would be happy with it, but he doesn’t fill a gap in midfield and would only really be fine if one of Bernardo or Engels were moving on

The midfield is so unbalanced and this would only make that worse

But he's a combative runner. We absolutely don't have that in our midfield.

Height is massively overrated. Messi is 5'7'', Maradona was 5'5'', Pele was 5'8'', I could go on and on. We play football, not basketball.

Will never understand the fascination with height on this board. I genuinely find it very strange. But then again, I'm not scottish. Perhaps it's a cultural thing? Physicality was traditionally a big thing in scottish/english football. Not so much in other countries like Spain, Portugal, Brazil, etc.

Last great manager who relied heavily on height and physicality was Mourinho who's not getting top-level jobs anymore. The majority of teams either rely on ball pressure (Flick, Slot, Klopp, Ange) or on technical ability (Pep and all Pep wannabes). Neither of these styles require physically dominant players. It's not that teams stop using them, but they aren't necessary anymore.
