Here we go again..

 

Can't wait to lose him to Crystal Palace for nothing when his contract runs out.

 

He's signed a 2yr extension last year, so we/he have a bit of time.

Jude Bonnar came on in the 80th minute on Wednesday night there. How important is it for you to promote younger talents coming through the academies?

Always, always. Every club I've been at, that was a big part of my development as a coach.

I worked for 15-odd years in youth development, so I like to think I know it quite well. I'm passionate about young players and every club I've been at I've always played young players and put them in. So yes, it's a nice reward for Jude.

The path into any first team is not meant to be easy. It's not just something that you go through your age groups. You have to earn the right to come in, but at the same time I'm always looking for the opportunity to put in young players and we have to have space for them.

I think that's what's important. So it's nice for Jude. He's done very well with the second team, but not only that, he's working very, very hard, which I notice I see him in the gym a lot, doing his extra to get himself physically ready.

He's technically very good in the game. Like I said, he's improving his physicality. He's improving the competitive side to his game.

Tactically, he understands how we work and for him to get that feeling of coming in. For me, what he also showed was personality, because I like my players, especially young players, to have the personality to come into the arena and play for Celtic. He showed all of that, so it should hopefully give him that bit of motivation now to push on

 

That’s a whole lot of words to say we probably won’t see him on the pitch again. He’ll be locked in whatever room Frame’s been kept in since he impressed against Feyernood.

Yes, not supposed to be easy. Not supposed to be nigh on impossible either.

His cameo he looked good, not outstanding or anything but was a good showing for a debut and limited amount of time in a game plodding towards a strolled thumping.

When they get that opportunity and don’t look out of place we’re supposed to build on that. Anyone think my prediction of not seeing him again is a poor one? I’ll be pleasantly surprised if I’m wrong.

 

Hopefully he gets more game time today he looks as if he has real physicality..

The inside track on Celtic teenager Jude Bonnar's potential


He was the stick-out player as a kid who is now being advised to stick in if he is to make the grade at Celtic.


Jude Bonnar's rise from Mill United Boys Club to bona fide Celtic first-team player put a huge smile on the face of his former coach Alan Tait.

Tait coached Bonnar at Mill United for six years from when he was four years old until he reached double figures before Celtic came calling.

Bonnar's former football mentor insists that the attacking midfielder stood out from the pack back then despite competing against players who were a year and a half older than him.

Tait said: "Jude stood out at a young age. He showed qualities that set him apart. He was 18 months younger than the rest of our boys but he was a stick out within a really strong team.

"He was technically really gifted, had a real willingness to learn, and had an intense desire to win even at that age."

Ironically Mill United are no strangers when it comes to rearing talented young produce. The likes of Derek Ferguson, Barry Ferguson, Paul Hartley, and Lewis Ferguson to name but a few have all honed their craft and skills with the renowned boys club down throughout the years.

Does Tait believe that 19-year-old Bonnar can follow in those famous footsteps and carve a career for himself at Celtic?

He said: "Every player develops in their own way, but Jude certainly has that potential


The key now is how he applies himself at the senior level to continue that development. He’s a very promising young player with all the attributes needed to make an impact at Celtic.

"He is also six foot two inches tall now with a really gifted left foot and that can only help his chances


Tait said: "I would just tell Jude to keep doing what he is doing and to keep working hard in training.

"One first-team appearance is a great milestone, but it’s only the beginning. He has to learn from the experienced players around him and focus on improving the small aspects of his game.

"Finally when he gets his chance - take it!"

One thing is for certain, Tait is convinced that Bonnar is in the safest of coaching hands with Rodgers at the Celtic managerial helm.

The Irishman said this of Bonnar in the aftermath of the Dons game: "It's great for young Jude Bonnar to get his first appearance. He’s working very, very hard with the second team. He’s got a good profile and fits how we want to play. So that is a nice little taster for him."

Tait also sees Rodgers as the ideal manager to improve Bonnar's game at a critical juncture of his career.

Tait said: "Brendan Rodgers has a great track record of developing young players and giving them the opportunity if they prove themselves.

"Jude will learn so much under Rodgers' guidance, especially in terms of tactical understanding and the mentality needed.

"If he takes everything on board and he sticks in then it should be a huge boost for his career."

 

See how he goes the rest of the season as he should get more game time once the league is wrapped up. Pre-season with the first team and potentially break into the squad full time next season. Good luck to the lad!

 

Clubs in between a rock and a hard place regarding youths, play them and if they look good, rich clubs come in and snap them up for next to nothing don't play them rich clubs come in and snap them up for next to nothing.

I must admit I'd rather we gave them more first team game time, obviously foreign coaches are still able to see them when playing for the B team.
I think Rodgers is being far to strict in what he's demanding of them

 

Anyone have an opinion on Rodgers exposure of young players to the first team.

Ure gets player of year and hasn't featured with first team at all..

Turley, bonnar and McArdle seemed to have been singled out and in the case of turley and bonnar before disappearing again..

I don’t think this is really on Rodgers. A big part they’ve probably been in and out is because they’re just not great prospects.

It’d be a bit different if we had a clear standout in the academy like Doak was, but right now there isn’t anyone.

McArdle has looked very technical when I’ve watched him but his physicality is lacking. The others all seem a bit meh to me, can’t see any of them making it here.

 

Hard when you're expected to win 100% of your games but between now and the end of the season he should at least give a few of them the odd 30 mins here and there to see how they fair. Players can look completely different when surrounded by first team players rather than guys their own age, sometimes for the better.

 

It's a tough one.

As fans we demand we have two great players in each position and are screaming for new recruits all the time.

Where do youngsters fit into this? They have to be good enough to squeeze into our match day squad, and really rely on an injury crisis for the opportunity as facts are usually our back up is someone we've invested a good chunk of change on.

Ideally we'd be producing loads of ready made plug and play young players who are as good as or better than our first team players, but that's not the reality.

Coupled with the fact our fans demand nothing less than a convincing win each week, it's really hard for a manager to get the balance and give youth a chance, without compromising what fan expectations demand.

 

Genuinely don't buy the overly competitive nature of our games. Since Xmas alone there have been 8 games where we were more than 1 goal ahead on the hour mark. Many of that 8 we were more than 2 goals ahead. One spot of the bench to be exposing a earmarked player is reasonable. It's a question of bravery to me. We were brave enough to let kyogo go and let Maeda and idah cover the responsibility. there is opportunity and room there to bring 1/2 through a season. In fairness though they have to be actually good enough in the first place. That's where I see the problem. .. personally would have preferred Anderson or frame had been given the opportunity instead of schlupp since January. Dunno if schlupp over either of those will make any fundamental difference to our overall season performance..

I agree that there shoukd be scope to occasionally allow one of the 5 subs to be a youth player. For me though there is definitely a pressure on the club to invest in buying players I think that does come at the expense of the youth, as it's ultimately those imports lining our bench when everyone is fit

They have to be special to have a chance and the special ones get snapped up it seems.
