Celtic FC B suffered their first defeat of 2024 on Saturday afternoon, losing out in a ten-goal thriller against East Stirlingshire.

With just three Lowland League matches left, Darren O’Dea and Stephen McManus’ side travelled to East Stirlingshire for their penultimate away match of the campaign.

And the young Hoops made the strong start to proceedings, opening the scoring on just eight minutes through Lewis Dobbie. Following last week’s double in the 2-0 win at Forthbank Stadium, the forward continued his fine form in front of goal.

Latching on to Mitchell Robertson’s inch-perfect cross into the box, Dobbie’s first touch allowed him space to slot the ball home under the goalkeeper.

However, despite that positive start, the home side quickly equalised. After failing to clear the initial cross into the box, the ball was smashed into the top corner of the net by Callum Murray.

The Celts quickly produced a response of their own to regain the lead as Dobbie fired in his second of the afternoon, tapping the ball into the back of the net from Bruno Davidson’s cross.

Once more, though, East Stirlingshire quickly got themselves back level in the game through Scott Honeyman.

Chasing a long ball over the top, the forward tried his luck with an effort from just outside the box, which Kai McLean couldn’t get enough of a hand on to stop.

After an extremely busy opening 20 minutes of the match, the excitement didn’t stop there in the first half as the home side managed to take the lead for the first time in the match, courtesy of Scott Rankin.

However, it was Celtic’s turn to produce a quick-fire response, scoring the sixth goal of an action-packed half of football.

Running on to a clever ball in behind, some unselfish play on the right by Davidson allowed Ben Quinn the simplest of tasks to tap the ball into the back of an empty net.

And Celtic almost took the lead within minutes of the restart, but Magnus Mackenzie was denied by a good save.

However, it was East Stirlingshire who scored the first goal of the half as Rankin fired his side back into the lead.

As they had done towards the end of the first half, the Bhoys aimed to respond and came within inches of grabbing another goal back as Dobbie hit the crossbar with an effort.

But it was the home side who would grab an important goal in the game, making it 5-3 with around 19 minutes left.

With just under 10 minutes remaining, Jude Bonnar did manage to pull another back for the Hoops, but East Stirlingshire sealed all three points with a quick-fire goal, to regain their two-goal advantage and leave the final score 6-4 to the home side.

The young Celtic side will look to bounce back from their impressive unbeaten run coming to a close as they return to the Excelsior Stadium for the final time this season when they take on Hearts next Friday evening.

Celtic FC B booked their place in the final of the Glasgow Cup final on Tuesday evening after running out 6-3 winners against Partick Thistle.

In what proved to be an entertaining night of action at Lennoxtown, doubles from Bruno Davidson, Lewis Dobbie and Ben Quinn sealed the victory for the young Hoops.

It was a particularly frantic opening 15 minutes of action , with six of the nine goals of the evening being scored inside the opening 22 minutes of the match.

The Celts made the best possible start to the game as Bruno Davidson opened the scoring after just four minutes with a well-taken left footed finish after picking up the ball inside the area.

It didn’t take long for the winger to add to his and Celtic’s tally either as, just three minutes later, he scored Celtic's second of the night.

Pouncing on a mistake at the back, Davidson slotted the ball home to hand the Bhoys a well-deserved early 2-0 advantage.

However, with their first chance of the evening Partick Thistle were quickly back in the game as they pulled one back.

That being said, Celtic soon restored their two-goal lead, with Lewis Dobbie scoring the first of his two goals of the night when he was on hand to anticipate a loose back pass to the goalkeeper, rounding the Thistle shot-stopper before slotting the ball home.

The forward soon joined Davidson by grabbing a quick-fire double of his own just beyond the 20-minute mark, turning home a well-worked move down the right hand side following some unselfish play by Daniel Cummings.

The young Hoops appeared to be cruising to the final of the Glasgow Cup after an emphatic performance inside the opening stages of the match.

However, the away side weren’t going to go down without a fight, and before the first half came to a close they were able to claw themselves back into proceedings, scoring to make it 4-3 heading into the break.

But, the end result never seemed to be in doubt as the Celts made a similar quick start to the second half, scoring inside three minutes of the restart.

This time, Ben Quinn was on hand to tuck a low finish underneath the on-rushing Thistle goalkeeper to hand the Bhoys a two-goal advantage once more.

And as the game entered the closing stages, the winger added a further goal to make it 6-3, producing a lovely dinked effort into the back of the net after latching on to a well-weighted pass over the top.

A nine goal thriller at Lennoxtown would see the young Hoops book their place in the Glasgow Cup final next month.

The Bhoys will soon discover who they face in the final, with either Rangers or Queen's Park lying in wait. For now, though, the focus will go into the final Lowland League match of the campaign as Stephen McManus’ side travel to take on Tranent this Saturday.

Celtic FC B team duo, Jude Bonnar and Corey Thomson, have both put pen to paper on new deals with the club, extending their stay with the Hoops for a further two years.

The Academy youngsters have played a consistent role this campaign in what has been another busy season for the young Hoops.

Having initially joined Celtic at the age of seven, Bonnar has had a breakthrough year for the B team, making the permanent step up from the Under-18s in 2023.

After signing his first professional deal towards the end of 2021, the midfielder has showcased his versatility, particularly in the second half of the season, nailing down a role in the centre of the pitch.

For Thomson, it has been a difficult second half of the campaign after sustaining an injury earlier this year. However, it has been another strong year for the 18-year-old.

During his second full year as part of the B team set-up, the midfielder has continued his development, playing a big role in competitions such as the UEFA Youth League and Premier League International Cup.

Everyone at Celtic would like to congratulate Jude and Corey on signing their new deals, and we look forward to seeing them continue their journey in the green and white Hoops.

 

We are pleased to confirm that the young duo of Dane Murray and Lenny Agbaire are the latest Celts to have put pen to paper on new deals with the club.

The centre-back pairing have signed fresh two-year contracts with the Hoops, which will see them both remain at Celtic Park until the summer of 2026.

After playing his part in the Under-18s’ Scottish Youth Cup final success in 2023, it has been a breakthrough year for Lenny Agbaire with the Celtic FC B team squad.

The 19-year-old played a major role from the centre of defence as the young Hoops played out another busy campaign of competitive fixtures.

Dane Murray is a player who has already had his first taste of senior football, making his debut in UEFA Champions League qualifying against FC Midjtylland back in 2021.

However, the past two seasons have been hindered by long-term injury for the defender, who has worked hard to get back to full fitness once again.

Everyone at Celtic would like to congratulate the duo on signing new deals with the club, and hope to see them continue their progression
