Hi everyone. I’m a bit * off in my current job. I have enjoyed most of my time there but they are having a restructure coming up which means roles are going to change. (Same money by the looks of it but less responsibilities / removing duties that I enjoy). I have been there for 5 years as well so fairly well established in doing my current job.

I have been wanting to do my Nebosh certificate for quite some time and have asked for this in my last 3-4 annual appraisals but I think the company are just not wanting to put us through it because they probably know that we will just jump ship. So I am seriously looking at paying for it myself and keeping an eye out for opportunities elsewhere.

Out of all the certificates / courses that I have looked at putting myself through what I like about Nebosh is that it’s a globally recognised qualification as well so I would like to think it opens a lot of opportunities not just within the UK but also abroad if I ever decided to try my luck elsewhere. It also doesn’t expire so not one of these courses that you have to do refreshers etc for (a bonus when you are looking to fund it yourself!)

Anyone on here done their Nebosh / involved in Health and Safety?

To stop people jumping ship they usually make you pay for it if you jump ship within 2 years of passing.

I am just starting NEBOSH national cert, company paying for it, with Compassa. It's learn at your own pace and fun. They have a demo too, so you can see if you like the style. Also have an 80% pass rate which is quite high.
Every company needs H&S because it's the law. Always jobs available and once a H&s advisor companies will probably pay for your diploma.

If you pay for it yourself, don’t whatever you do, tell your employer. They will give you more responsibilities because you would have the certificate but won’t increase the pay and will not reimburse you for your willingness to better yourself.

Good luck mate. I was looking at the online e learning way as well as it gives you complete flexibility when you do your studies and do your exams but I think now I am just going to go for the online classroom method and just blitz it because I want to get the qualification as soon as possible.

Just had a look at the website there that sounds really good.

Yeah I was speaking to someone recently and they said companies can end up saying you can’t leave within a certain period of time and if you do you end up having to pay so they said to me you are better off paying for it yourself and then you don’t owe the company anything which I totally agree with!

Definitely mate I wouldn’t tell anyone at work I was doing it for the reasons above. I would want to get the qualification on the quiet and then apply for other jobs in the background.

I get the just do it method, but it's 2 weeks and that doesn't include the exam fees, usually about 2k. The exam would require another day off work. My org offered it but I said no, I struggled with a concentration at school and I just wouldn't take it in.

One of the sites I have looked at for the online classroom route is around £1300 with exams and you can spread the payments out as well which is a big bonus.

I do a 4 on 4 off rota at work so I have had a look at the dates that would be best for me in terms of having to take least days off.

I was initially just going to do it the e-learning way but I thought it might be too easy for me to put the work off some days as much as I am motivated to do it.

It’s good that there is so many opportunities these days for doing courses like this to suit everyone’s circumstances. My cousin paid for it himself years ago but ended up going down the classroom route which was expensive with having to pay accommodation etc on top of the course fees for the full duration!

All the best for it mate :50:

yeah it's easy to just put the learning off. I've done that before. Also some learn at your own pace courses are *, just pdfs.

It is great having different options.

Who is offering it at 1300, I've got colleagues who want to do it. They may prefer that, it's me who doesn't as I just struggle to do 8 HRs of learning.
Knowledge a ademy who my work use often wanted 1800 plus vat plus 230 for exams.

Some places offer 1 week and then 1 week a month later, if you have 4 on 4 off that might fit your schedule better.

You can also do a NEBOSH award which lasts 3 days I think. Might be good to see if you enjoy it. That's only a GCSE equivalent, Cert is A-level and Diploma Degree.

That’s the site I was looking at mate- https://www.phoenixhsc.co.uk/nebosh-courses/nebosh-national-general-certificate

For the proper classroom route with them you aren’t for off £2k but online classroom is a good bit cheaper.

There was also another website I was looking at called RRC International but Phoenix have better reviews. Similar prices anyway. Haven’t committed to anything at the moment.

Yeah I am very motivated to do it but just wonder if it would too easy to put the learning off at times with the e learning / do it yourself route for me anyway. I want to get through it ASAP and hope the classroom route will allow me to do that.

Knowledge academy charge the same for online which is a joke, 1100 plus vat is decent though with about 500 saving.

I did look at Phoenix before , they are rated Gold by NEBOSH go id go with them if dates fit round you.

Are you doing national or international?

I was just going to go for National mate.

At first I thought maybe the international one was the one that was recognised internationally but after reading about both it became clear that both are recognised globally and the National one just applies more to UK law whereas the international one applies more to International law but both are recognised internationally just slight differences on the content for the legislation side of things.

Are you doing the National one as well?

I was looking at the site you sent and seen yours is also Nebosh Gold.

National for me, both globally recognised (alot of UK law will be based on WHO advice) but I'm doing facilities maintenance so want to learn on UK law side.

NEBOSH is more widely recognised and can often be a requirement for jobs. If IOSH is a requirement it's usually with IOSH or NEBOSH. I think you are right to aim higher.

Heavily depends on the company you work for this, and how you demand proper compensation for extra duties. If they don’t pay you don’t have they duties.

If it’s the type of company your describing, have another offer from another company and approach them from a position of strength of not needing them and you’re doing them a favour by giving them the option of you stepping up to a role with more responsibilities, that they need to make sure to impress on you that it’s better to be with them than anywhere else.

And get every negotiation and conversation backed up in writing, email afterwards any talk about a different role in a verbal offer ‘just to confirm our last talk about my role my understanding is…’

They won’t take the pish if they know they can’t.

Took me far too long to learn that lesson.

Thanks mate. Yeah that’s my plan anyway, might cost a bit of money but I am looking at it like an investment and hopefully get more money like you say. Hope it pays off!

I like how it’s globally recognised as well so I can always seek opportunities elsewhere in the future if I fancy it :D

That wouldn't happen or shouldn't happen. He will have a job description for the role he currently occupies.

For what it's worth, @_DannyBhoy_ I work in a chemical plant. I'm a chemical engineer but have moved into a managerial role as the asset/energy manager and a large part of my role is to have meetings with different contractors on the site. We have contractors who manage and maintain our Boiler Station, basically to get around SEPA and UKETS permits. The company who run the Boiler Station basically run off 2 guys. They're a gas company, but they took on the Boiler Station because they make quite a pretty penny for it. They know nothing about steam or the processes of that outwith the 2 guys working on site. The guys on site are amazing, they're a Site Manager and the Site Technician but the amount of work they do between them is causing us to have issues, basically because the contractor can't/won't provide them additional support within our site. It's now escalated to a health and safety incident on site. We aren't happy about it.

Anyways, because of the stress the guys have been under on the Boiler Station, the site manager paid for his own Nebosh and has been doing that himself over the last couple of years. He completed it 3 months ago and handed in his notice to the contractor last week. I was having a discussion with him on Friday, he informed he's moving across to Angola in the new year to work on a rig off the coast of Africa. 6 weeks on and 6 weeks off. He has trebled his salary, all because of the Nebosh, or so he explained.

If you can, go for it. One of the best qualifications you can get. Effectively guarantees you a job anywhere in the world. He told me it's the hardest course he's ever had to do though. Took him 2 years to do it himself, with working and responding to call outs pretty much every week.

Thanks for this mate. Everyone I have spoken to about it has only encouraged me to go for it and says how good the qualification is.

I hope I can pass it after all this :giggle1:

I was initially planning going for the e learning way / working through the course work yourself but I think for me the online classroom course might be a better fit, I hope so anyway. Want to just blitz it as soon as possible as well so hopefully this is the best way.

My cousin paid for it himself as well and he said that the pass papers were a big help for him.

Was it the Nebosh general cert the site manager did?

The Nebosh Diploma sounds next level as well!
