I did see what you did, mate, lol.

I'm not sure where they came from. It was my mother's paternal side (Bradys) who came from there in the late 19th century.

My great grandfather Convery on my mother's maternal side came over from Belfast around the time of the Civil War in Ireland.

My father's paternal side (McColes) came from Burtonport and Arranmore in Donegal. They would go to Muthill in Perthshire during tattie howking season then return to Donegal. They eventually just ended up settling in Muthill though. My grandfather joined the rest of his family there around 1950.

My great aunt was an Irish folk singer and there's a festival held in honour every year on Arranmore - celebrating her life and her music. I was over there for it in May.

My family are Barra and Eriskay, which are almost exclusively Celtic.

I wouldn't say Coatbridge is 50/50, far from it. There's now more a noticeable presence, but places like Gartsherrie and Townhead more mixed than langloan, Kirkwood, Kirkshaws etc.

Some hun buses leave from carsons and the Segton, but it's nothing like 50/50.

Increasingly more and more of English retirees, stats suggest (applies to the whole of H&I generally)

There urgently needs to be a law against this if Gaelic and possibly even Welsh are to survive. That's not even getting into the effect on the young people who have to leave. I'm not saying the people who buy second homes in these places are themselves selfish (I think it's a natural desire, if you have the money, to want to have your cake and eat it by having a place like that you can go to); but if the effect it has on these communities were more widely known, people would see just how extraordinarily selfish this is. There are similar problems in idyllic spots in Germany, etc too.

Ah I see, I was curious as I'm from Galway myself. Don't know any Bradys though!

Just reading about your great aunt now, her story is fascinating!

I live in Aberdeen and it's definitely got more Huns than Tim's. Probably stems from family's moving up during the oil boom years.
However the amount of younger lads that don't support any Scottish team is alarming, all due to sky sports pushing how great the prem is consistently on TV.

That is very common in Ireland, disappointing to hear it's happening in Scotland too. We live in a very monocultural society, so it's hardly a surprise, but still disappointing.

Inverness is a weird city. Most people I've met here aren't from Inverness and that includes Scots. As a Glaswegian living here said to me, it's a tourist city. Even the cleaning lady I was speaking to today told me she moved here years back. I've met a lot of Gaelic speakers here from the islands who are immigrants just like me lol Gaelic is an interesting topic but not for this thread I guess...and back to work Zzzz

Ahh, cool. As I say, the Bradys have been in Dundee for a few generations now.

Yeah, my great aunt's story really is fascinating, mate. I loved the festival and was treated brilliantly. It was such an amazing week.

There's a book about her life, too: Roisé Rua: An Island Memoir.

It's literally their business model, though, to aggressively market the league all over the world. Neither the English clubs nor the EPL don't get these ludicrous revenue streams from English fans alone, or they'd have similar turnovers to similar-sized Italian clubs.
No one in their right mind can think it's sustainable for quite literally billions ( https://www.sportingindex.com/spread-betting-blog/premier-league-viewing-figures ) of people all over the world to have an English team, buy the merch and/or pay to watch the matches. It's terrifying and I'm so thankful that they didn't accept us into their league.

You're right of course, but I can still be disappointed by it!

I suppose football can never be divorced from the political and economic realities of the day. That can be a positive (see Celtic's unique identity), but in the context of English football and wider Anglo/American cultural hegemony, it's obviously hugely negative. As you say, it cannot be sustained. You'd have to hope that when the bubble bursts, the game will change for the better (even a little).

Anyway, I don't to drag this too far off topic, but interesting to discuss this in the context of the future of support for local clubs (or even clubs in your own country...)

I see Inverness as more of a hun town based on the people I know here, and the amount of mutants in town I see with hun tops compared to Celtic gear.
There used to be a sevco store on the high street, right next door to the Orange mobile phone shop haha

Those of you complaining about English everywhere ought to try living in central Edinburgh. Lived in Newington and Morningside for a few years and it's like a weird English colony. It's not just students either, all the local school children have English accents. Miss Jean Brody's long gone.

English you say! Inverness has entered the chat! I wonder where there's the most English living in Scotland?

Always found that weird about Edinburgh..

They've got that distinctive strong 'eh' accent but I've seen plenty that would sound as English as the Queen and say they're fron Edinburgh and that's an Edinburgh accent

Even the broad Scottish ones are more likely to say yeah instead of aye etc..

From an outsiders look and places i go or have spent time in from a kid on I'd say

    Royston - Tims
Dennistoun - Hun Central and when I was up for summers there was barely any tims in that bit by Roebank Street/Alexandra Court and just up from there was where the Tims with tricolours would come over and have murders with them every other night :giggle1:
Knightswood - Always felt much more hunnish to me when through there
Possil - meant to be quite mixed but bands on and felt much more hunnish that area when I've been there
Hamilton - Tims for me, especially old town but just the town in general I've always felt is much more us bar some of the outskirts like Burnbank
Blantyre - majority Tims? Feels like it although some huns there

Others will know better than me. Feel like the longer you got away from Glasgow and the surrounding areas, the more hunnish places seemed..

When I was last through there at my cousins (20 year ago), the orange walk was getting bricked either side of the road and pelted all the way down by this main road..

Sad days if that isn't still the case :BR1:
