Haha that's because they had 9 other crappy Aussie players to carry. I don't think I'm exaggerating in saying that most Celtic starting 11 players (and probably a few benchies) would walk into the Australian national side.

To be fair, Behich carried the Australian team, with some lesser help from Mooy, Souttar and Leckie.

Australia's ranked 27 in the world. I think you're exaggerating rather a lot, but nice trolling.

Haha not trolling and crappy maybe was too strong a word but most of our Aussie players are lower-level scottish premier league, english championship, a-league level at best. There is a reason most of them are playing where they are. I love our national team but I always struggle when supporters expect too much out of our players like Mooy and Rogic that are playing at a high level when clearly the players they are playing with at club level are much better than our national team players.

I kind of feel that world rankings bear little significance to club football.

As an exercise go through last nights starting 11 and compare it to the Australian side that played Argentina and pick your best 11. Not many Aussies making that side and the point I am trying to make is it is unreasonable to expect Rogic and Mooy to perform as well at National team level because of the quality of their teammates as compared to club footy. Not trolling just being realistic.

Congratulations, you missed the point. Here it is from an article some time ago:

Questions have been asked of the Socceroos after their 2-1 defeat to Japan on Tuesday night in Saitama.

Coming into the game off the back of an 11-game winning streak, the Socceroos failed to gain any ascendency in the clash and looked a class below a Japan side that has struggled so far in World Cup qualifying.

As a result, Graham Arnold’s team selection has been criticised, particularly the omission of Awer Mabil and the deployment of both Tom Rogic and Aaron Mooy in the midfield.

Why Rogic and Mooy are two of Australia’s best players, the question has been raised of whether they can coexist alongside each other due to their similar game styles.

Former Socceroo Mark Milligan believes there’s no “easy answer” for Arnold when it comes to his star midfield duo.

“That (potentially dropping one of Mooy or Rogic) is very difficult as you said,” Milligan said on 1170 SEN’s The Global Game.

“That’s been a headache for Ange (Postecoglou) as well and I don’t know if ‘Arnie’ (Graham Arnold) is sort of going to do like Ange did and go three number 10s (Mooy, Rogic and Massimo Luongo) just to fit them in. I don’t know if that’s the solution either.

“Maybe it’s not such a problem if you have Aaron Mooy who’s in season and playing regularly.

“I think if that’s happening he’d play a more traditional six or eight role, I think that was definitely a factor in ‘Arnie’s’ thought process.

“He hasn’t had match minutes which makes it difficult.”

I understood your point - I just disagree. That Japan loss was more about the disparity between the two squads rather than a Mooy/Rogic thing. If they were very similiar players I would probably take your point but Mooy is a work horse who looks after the ball very well, very good in the challenge but not the most dynamic of players. Rogic can be absolutely magic on his day, a lot more dynamic but can drift in and out of games and doesn't have a great engine. They are both my two favourite Aussie players by a good margin which is why I have been lurking on here for the past decade. The one thing they do have in common is they are both very humble players and not so good in interviews :).

Sorry about hijacking the thread - I won't post anymore for a while.

I am hoping for the same as Ange here, Mooy is more slow twitch, than fast twitch muscle (endurance over explosive pace).
And he hasn’t played a heap of football the last 4 season, and hasn’t had a career of serious injuries.
If he doesn’t suffer from soft tissue tears, and he’s knees and ankles hold together, he may have another 4+ years of quality football in him, without his level dropping.

“I have known Aaron since he was a young kid and he has got this great capacity to keep working, he runs all day. If you look at before he came to us he didn’t play much and I am kind of hoping he saved it up for the rest of his career.”

My recollection is that before we signed him it was what you said that was being reported but when we actually signed him it was a 2 year deal.

This is from the celtic website:

...And the 31-year-old midfielder, who has joined the club on a two-year deal, is looking forward to doing so again, knowing the standards that the Hoops boss demands of his players.

I should learn my lessons really.

Thought Hart didn't offer anything to us - wrong.

Thought Mooy after China debacle didn't have the legs for it anymore and was no replacement for Rogic (albeit different styles I know) - wrong.

    So very very wrong.

I think it is safe to say now that if Ange can be shown to have been a key person involved in signing a player who is 30+ he'll come good no problem.

I could see how that would be the case the lack of pace and mobility would see us face problems like we did against Bodo/Glimt with O’Riley and Rogic in there and O’Riley is a lot more mobile than Mooy.

    Clearly you are trolling.

I'm not going to be dragged into another pointless comparison of AL / Oz quality with the SPL / Scotland so this is my final word on it (for now). Australia just came 11th at the World Cup and were a bee's * away from forcing Argentina into extra time in the round of 16.

Exactly which SPL players are forcing their way into that side? Callum McGregor - definitely... but not many others.

You'll note on this very thread that one or two have started referring to Mooy as arguably the best player in Scotland right now (and people often said that of Rogic). That's the level needed to make the Oz NT.

Was there not a few SPFL players in the squad? And a couple of failed ones like Irvine and Cummings as well? Work, a wee touch of class with a couple of played and excellent team work get’s Australia there, there’s not many standouts like other national teams. Similar to Scotland.

For me, Kyogo, Jota, Abada, Carter-Vickers, Taylor, Maeda, Haksabanovic, O’Riley, Hatate, Turnbull, McGregor, Ralston would all be in the squad. Probably a few more tbh.

Thats not quite true. Quite a lot of us actually could see early on that he was a very intelligent footballer, just as usual there were some who dont know a lot about football outwith celtic.

You are talking about a guy who has played at a very high level and been lauded by the fans of those teams.
