stunning move by the club to take us on to the next level ....we may not be near the income of the EPL but getting money in will surely give us dominance for years to come ......Some have certainly missed the boat on this ...there is only 1 way to go for them ......Sink !!!! :icon_mrgreen:

I think we're tied into the Carling sponsorship until 2010(Y/N?) After that we should be able to find a better sponsor.

Lawell is doing a fine job, hope he doesn't leave anytime soon.

im really excited about this, its great to have someone with high hopes and aspirations leading the way...

as others have said, we're miles ahead of the competition in these stakes..

id never ever ever ever back the change of the name of the stadium, however. not in a million years....

I know it sounds good to ditch Carling and our association with the Orcs, but, we actually get more money as a job lot. We get more money as "The Old Firm" than we do as individuals when it comes to sponsorship.

Another brilliant move by Lawell. The man is a revelation. When it comes to Celtic as an international brand, we have as much potential as any club in the world. Light years ahead of the huns in this department.

it would be worth losing a few million just so we lose all ties with them, and with the way we go about our buisness these day, especially with moves like this,we would easily make the lost cash up

As an American I welcome this move. It is obvious Celtic sees the big picture and realizes that it needs to expand beyond Scotland if it is to compete Globally as well as on the continent.

The new tv deal will help but it is still a drop in the bucket relative to the tv money available to English clubs. With football(soccer) getting bigger by the day in the US it seems logical to try to increase the exposure here (as well as Asia/ Japan). We now get same day coverage on cable tv of the old firm matches (as opposed to pay for live sattelite feeds at bars or wait 3 days for the replay on Setanta), with increased Champions League coverage on ESPN they are shown live 2 or 3 times a season here. But until the "suits" at the network see Celtic as a larger global brand, they will limit our appearences to the ties with ManU, Milan and Barca.

But it is a fact that we are and always will be inexticably linked to Rangers and this link is part of our identity as a club. This should be used as part of our global marketing strategy. I turned my cousin on to the Hoops by convincing him that he should get up at 7am on a Sunday to come with me to a bar to watch his first Old Firm derby. Halfway through the game, he turns to me and tells me he has never seen a game played in such atmosphere with this level of passion and intensity. Now he gets it. There is a certain ying - yang relationship that we need to acknowledge with Rangers and use it to our benefit.

An idea that has been shot down by the EPL is the possiblity of playing games abroad. If they want to be short sighted, why not do it in the SPL? The idea is pretty simple, you take teams like Falkirk and Inverness get them to agree to give up one of thier home games against Celtic or Rangers, you play the games in the US, Canada or Japan, they keep the gate(larger than they would have gotten at thier smaller ground), you can probably sell additional tv rights in the local market expanding the exposure and when people see our fans that will inevitable show up we get the global exposure and its a win-win.

The game abroad thing is dead in the water by every football organisation around the world except the english FA and you want us to try it on? Like trying to join the EPL, its never ever going to happen.

Where is the resistance coming from? Domestically?

Like I pointed out- Falkirk can have a full ground with 8,000 people or play in NY, Boston, Chicago, Tokyo or Toronto and play in front of 30,000 - 40,000(and get the gate receipts).

The league would also generate additional revenue to be spread around helping everyone. Realistically, the SPL doesn't hold a candle to the EPL in prestige, revenue or exposure.

The (misguided in my opinion)uproroar from the English fans was a (wee)bit understandable because they only get to see the big clubs once a year and given the massive amounts of money available there is a lot more parity from #5 to #18. Some of these clubs didn't want to give up thier home field advantage.

If the club and league don't try different ways to penetrate other markets we will continue to be viewed as an elite team in a second or third tier league. Its only through increasing exposure and revenue streams in modern sports that you build up the competition and credibility.

There is a bit of condecension from the European supporters on this issue and as an American I shake my head and move on. Many of the quotes I have heard bordered on hysterical American bashing. Its ok I have thick skin but I will point out, when was the last time anyone has heard about an American Football or Basketball franchise going bankrupt? The answer is never because the leagues have figured out a way to make it virtually impossible for teams to lose money in these leagues.

I understand there are vast differences in the economics involved between European football and American sports (including salary caps), my point is that people should be more open minded in viewing opportunities available to them. I suspect that is what this new appointement is all about.

Maybe foreign games are not the answer but for a team like Celtic playing in a legue like ours we need to be re-evaluating the opportunities presented to us. I know that when Murdoch paid for the rights to the Prem initially many people thought he was nuts and overpaid...

My post isn't meant as a knock on anyone I just think that starting out with a closed-minded approach isn't going to get us anywhere.

What did I just say? Every football organisation that it was proposed to by the English FA rejected it, FIFA, UEFA, CONCACAF, AFC all said no. When you have that sort of opposition it wont happen, EVER.

good, it cheapens the game, if i wanted to see celtic vs caley thistle i'd rather go to caleys * stadium than watch it being played in america, its a Domestic league for a reason

I agree with a lot of what McQ says apart from competitive games abroad.

It cheapens our OWN competition, which lets face it - the priority is being the Champion of Scotland so * everyone else.

This is what friendlies abroad (say in the USA) against the likes of Man U and Chelsea are for.

The reason there was opposition from all the groups you mentioned is because no-one explained to them what was in it for them (what thier cut was) Do you really need me to explain to you how Jack Warner from CONCACAF operates? If this guy didn't come from a third world country he would probably be in jail.

FIFA and UEFA didn't come out against it until the widely reported hysterics from English supporters.

Mexican teams have played regular season games in the US and guess what - they play in front of 80,000 fans and eveybody makes money. If people want to take a closed-minded approach to thinking outside the box, fine.

The focus should be to win the SPL but that is all it can ever be going forward because we can never aspire to win the CL because it will never happen again, the economics of football combined with the Demographics of Scotland will not allow it. Our aspirations in Europe will be to someday get to the final 8 and that is about it.

Look no further than our home leg against Barcelona this year in the second half we bring in Massimo Donati and they bring in Samuel Eto - you cannot compete with these kinds of resources over the long haul.
