Celtic's right back search has suffered a set back with top target Tommy Smith on the verge of a switch to Stoke City.

The Huddersfield Town defender was high up on Neil Lennon’s wishlist with the Hoops willing to bid up to £2.5m for the 27-year-old.

But Record Sport understands Smith has opted to remain in the Championship after the Potters met the asking price and a deal is set to be sealed on Thursday.

The full back was spotted leaving Huddersfield’s training camp in Austria on Wednesday but was heading to Staffordshire rather than Glasgow.

Celtic remain in the market for a right back and the loss of Smith could open the door for a move for Sheffield United’s George Baldock – who was also on Stoke’s radar.

The Parkhead side failed in a £3m bid for 26-year-old last month but could go back to the table with an increased bid.

Why would you leave Huddersfield Town for Stoke City at the age of 27? I give up. :giggle1:

I think we will spend a decent amount (over 5 mil) on a right back that hasn't been mentioned in the media yet

Just feel we are going to spend a fair whack on someone better than this anyway.

You might be the only one who thinks we’ll spend a * load on RB watch us get O’Donnell in now

There is a pattern. English players cost too much and want too much. Why we are looking there when we can be outspent by the likes of Bournemouth I have no idea.

Seems a better option for the money being talked about. I liked that Smith was captain though, could do with a couple more leaders.

Stacey and Smith signing for other teams just shows me we need to be more efficient with these transfers. We could have done business with either of these players if we done it quickly enough.

I'm not fussed on losing out on him or Stacey tbh. There is far better value elsewhere.

And I hope that's what we are doing. Have the feeling we will spend at least £5m on a RB and its perhaps why it's taking as long. Will be someone not linked.

Can we all agree if it gets to the end of this window and the board give it, 'we tried to get a few targets, blah blah blah', there is a full scale riot? Pitchforks, decapitations, pyres, the lot! :bash::57:

I've posted in other threads about Lennon preferring to buy British players and this would prove my point. Apart from the ridiculous amounts of money required in transfer fees and wages to sign players from English clubs the other major hurdle in getting them here is the fact that nowhere else on the planet is the Scottish game held in less esteem as in England. A lot of English footballers, maybe even the majority, genuinely believe that whilst we are a bigger club we are no better quality-wise than an English 3rd tier side. There are far better RB's we could bring in than Smith the question is will NL and his staff notice them.

We took a gamble not getting a RB in for this CL qualification round, would want one in for the next defo.

So we have a bit of time to get this right.

It's obviously the area that Nicky Hammond knows best, which is probably why we keep being linked with players down South but beyond this summer we need to be clever and start looking further afield. As you say, the minute one of these clubs comes in with the Sky money, we rarely end up landing the player. We've wasted weeks chasing Stacey, Baldock and Smith.
