St Pauli are club with roots in socialist left wing politics, if you go anywhere in Germany you'll usually find that lots of punks and anarchists follow the team, the skull and cross bones you see lots of punks wearing is their emblem. The St Pauli area is also famous for being a bit bohemian, lots of artists and free thinking people seem to gravitate towards the area, quite a few brothels there too....

They're basically as far away from the hun mentality as you can get which is why we celts get on with them so much!

    Copied form that wiki page:

"St. Pauli are also known for their close links with many other foreign clubs and enjoy a particularly close friendship with Celtic with St. Pauli fans attending Celtic games on the continent when Celtic play UEFA competitions. St Pauli flags and scarves are frequently seen on display at Celtic Park and every year Celtic supporters arrive in Hamburg for the annual St Pauli - Celtic Festival."

Has anyone ever read the book 'Celtic Minded'?

I read it ages ago so I'm not sure but if my memory serves me correctly then there is a chapter in it written by the guy who started the St. Pauli Celtic Supporters Club. I think that it all started because Celtic were playing a game somewhere in Germany and the guy, who was a St. Pauli fan, got on a train with lots of Celtic fans.

At first he was scared because of the bad reputation that British football fans have but then he started chatted to some of our fans and they invited him to go to the game with them. He went to the game and kept in touch with the Celtic fans. The guy and a few mates then started following Celtic and it all just evolved from that point.

I'm sure the story goes something like that.

Also, Rangers have strong links with FC St Pauli's rivals Hamburg SV. It won't surprise you to hear that HSV have a very right-wing, neo-* following. Not sure if that's a reaction to our link with St Pauli or the other way around, or just pure coincidence.

I'm thinking about going out to Hamburg in December. RyanAir have return flights for 2p including taxes :) 24 hour pubs :D

in another thread some were i mentioned hamburg as in the city ,talking in general ,that my brother in law stayed there for a few years ,and my family went out in 3-4 different occasions ,he stayed in pinneberg ,which i believe is not far from st pauli,we often past there as it didnt look the nicest part of hamburg ,but one i got talking to a local ,and he supported them ,now this was 20years ago ,he said that they were an up and coming team and mentioned about the support getting really big etc ,and st pauli as a place wasnt the nicest ,but the people were the nicest people around and it was them who gave st pauli the great following that they were starting to get ,i have sort of kept tabs on them ,and the guy was right ,they are quite a club:50:

St Pauli and Schalke were the first clubs with strong anti racist fanbase.
while others like Hamburg and Dortmund still have * problems.

("we beat the Schalker jews" and songs like that sung on their southstand)

to be fair its not the majority of them but they are there.

The Schalke Fan Initiative for ex was founding member of FARE (Football against Racism in Europe)
