check the machine is completely fully updated right up to its eyeballs from MS update first to eliminate any driver errors

It could be physical damage to the usb port or controller, try a different port.

Is the device using USB 1.0 or USB 2.0 and what type is your laptop?

It sounds as if it's a problem totally with your puter recognising diff exsternal devices, it's quite common actually, if you are still in warranty let them sort it.

I would make sure usb 2.0 is enabled within your systems BIOS(usually pressing delete while booting while get you into this). Would also as mentioned before make sure you are running with up2 date drivers on your laptop.

Have u tried removing reg key entries for the usb host controllers and then after removed go to device manager and press "scan for hardware changes" let it pick it up and should reconfigure and install your usb host controller.

It is one of the most common problems in laptops.

    works every time.

If it's a Windows XP machine, Windows XP SP2 is known to not install the USB drivers correctly. To fix that, in device manager, delete the USB hub completely, and reboot so Windows will re-discover it.
