My partner has a friend who does this. They are in some group that go out and ask farmers permission to metal detect on their property. Not sure if they are checking the history of these sites first.

not done it for quite a few years but with a cheap detector and a trowel and spade out the shed I hit lucky in the field beside me and found 4 roman coins and a broatch from a tunic (all roman); excited as * I cleaned them up and took them to an antique place in Carlisle for a valuation thinking they`d be worth thousands and Time Team would be pitching up to a do a televised dig however was offered £2 a coin and £4 for the broatch. Seemingly very common and not worth much.

Carried on with random searches but only ever found some old horse shoes and randon lumps of metal. Might actually look the gear out again as it was quite good fun and killed a few hours at the weekend

Culloden Battlefield is the place to go if youve got a metal detector. At night time tho, coz its not allowed. The place is desolate at night tho

Knowing my luck I'd head up to the black mountain get a loud Beeb, crack ma spade into the soil, hit a detonator next to 600 rounds of 50mm ammunition next to 100kg of Semtex and create a new feckin quarry.
