Brendan Rodgers: I'm lucky to be Celtic manager

TOMMY Burns famously said he was “a fan who got lucky” when asked about his Celtic career and that heart-felt sentiment from the Hoops legend has been echoed by new Celtic manager, Brendan Rodgers.
The pair shared a close friendship after Rodgers joined Burns’ Reading set-up as a youth coach in 1998, and the Irishman has now followed the former Celtic player and manager’s footsteps into the dugout at Paradise.
The impact Burns had on the new Celtic manager's career has been a lasting one and he delivered an impassioned message to the faithful Celts support today (Monday), which mirrored those iconic words from the Hoops legend.
“My message is that we’ll do our very best and I’m here because of them,” he said. “I’ve been a Celtic supporter all my life and I’m very lucky now to have been given the opportunity to step out of the stands and on to the sideline and manage the team.
“So hopefully they will understand that when you have that passion and emotion with the club, myself and the staff and the players will be doing absolutely everything we can to meet the challenges that are set for us - that’s to dominate here in Scotland and to qualify for the Champions League.
"For that we need them. This is an incredible football club, the support here is phenomenal and my idea is to get the stands filled again.
“In the last few years the top tier of the Lisbon Lions Stand has been closed or empty. It’s my job to get over 60,000 people in here again and inspire the supporters to come back and watch a game of football that excites them and is about scoring goals and is about winning.
“Ultimately that is hopefully what we can do here and if we can do that then I think we’ll be on the right track.”
The new manager made an impressive start to achieving his aim of filling the stands at Paradise when he was greeted by over 10,000 Celtic supporters at Paradise as he held his first media conference as manager.
His next task will be to assess the squad he has inherited but he hinted that he already has a good idea of the quality of players available at his disposal.
“I have to assess it a wee bit more,” he said. “Sometimes you can watch games and have an idea but it’s not until you work with the players.
“What I can say is there are a lot of talented players and I’m really looking forward to meeting the captain. Scott Brown is someone I’ve admired from a distance for a number of years and his drive and determination and quality is going to be important for me and the team.
“I know there are a number of other good players as well but until I get to work with them on a daily basis and we can come together then I can probably give a clearer idea then.”

Great stuff, make our way through the qualifiers and this could be some of the best times we have had since MoN!
