Has anyone ever successfully remade a classic movie better than the original?

I think if you love a movie then a remake is always going to seem inferior because you are comparing them off the bat. Any time I have watched a remake I've watched it in a certain frame of mind and it's never delivered.

I prefer the 1983 Scarface to the 1932 one, though I did watch the '83 version first.

Be nice to watch a movie you didn't know wasn't an original and then compare the remake to it, which you thought was an original.

I might need to lie down after that.

Ive not seen that many remakes and originals usually only watch 1 but the remake of the Last house on the left I would say is better than the original.

I downloaded Oldboy, meaning for it to be the original and was already watching it for maybe 20 minutes before I clocked that it wasn't but I watched it anyway and thought it was a good 7/10 film.

On IMDB its rated 5.8 and the Original is 8.4, so if the Original is that much better it must be great.

John Carpenter's The Thing ain't really a remake. Both movies are based on the same book though.
