Very confident now for the CL qualifiers! Can only improve.

 

Can't read too much into the result as it was their first game.

 

Had some pace in there team as well, overloaded Lustig the whole first half with 1 always overlapping. When Griffiths nearly scored they countered in 2 passes and were in on goal. But as said before it was their 1st game and were blown out their * after 30 mins when we stepped it up.

 

I think the first 30mins showed how well they can play, when we got up to pace they struggled, gives the team confidence which is what we need.

 

Did they not bring on their youth team while we kept on pretty much our first team for the entire match? Frankly, i thought all the midfielders were absolute gash against their first team and looked technically and physically lacking. Full backs looked poor. CBs looked good, impressed by Boyate. Thought Griffith looked sharp and full of running but got zero service or support from the guys behind him.

Gordon was kicking out aimlessly in the first half and just bringing them back on to us straight away. One thing that strikes me is that seeing as we have a 6 ft 6 midfielder in the team, why don't we stick him on the half way line and we should win the header every time?

Having said that it was just a friendly....

Confidence boosting win of course, but these games ordinarily don't mean anything once the proper stuff begins.

Our pre-season games are usually utter pish at the best of times, yet we're always comfortable when the season begins, domestically anyway.

 

Don't think so Castro came on later on and he was one of their best players last season am sure. I would say it was because of the CB's and Gordon that we started so poorly, they weren't quick enough passing the ball out and once they got pressed just lumped it forward instead of looking for the pass. But we definitely played a lot more defensively in the 1st half than usual, we were sitting too deep at times and not pressing well enough.
There was never going to be much work towards the game in training, just the ball work etc while Lustig, Mulgrew and Boyata find their way into the team and get more comfortable.
Was hoping Rogic or Henderson would get game time, don't see why Mulgrew got shifted into midfield.

 

They only made 6 subs all game. 3 of them were experienced and one was Pardo who altho young, is a Spanish u21 international. They at no point had a youth team out.

 

imo mulgrew played the full 90 as hes missed a lot of time. and I think its almost 100 % he will start on wed.

 

True but there's plenty of time to get everyone fit, Ambrose is there as well as O'Connel don't need to rush Charlie back just in case.
