Celtic have a had a £900,000 bid for Dundee United star striker Nadir Ciftci knocked back.
The Scottish Premier League champions have long coveted the Turkish forward has turned down a new deal at Tannadice and while United are open to selling the 23-year-old in this window if the price is right — they insist it will not be to Celtic.
The Tannadice board took flak from their fans after flogging Stuart Armstrong and Gary Mackay-Steven to Celtic in January, so decided earlier this year they wouldn’t make the same mistake again.
Ronny Deila has been a long-time admirer of the ex-Portsmouth and NAC Breda hitman but it now looks unlikely he will land his man in this transfer window.
With Ciftci’s contract set to expire next summer, the Norwegian’s best plan would appear to be waiting until January before opening talks about a pre-contract and testing United’s resolve again then.
It is also believed that Middlesbrough are poised to step in with a concrete bid.
Meanwhile, Kris Commons has suffered a broken toe after a WARDROBE DOOR fell on him and faces a race against time to be fit for next month’s Champions League qualifiers.

Commons was Celtic’s talisman in their last successful qualification bid for the Champions League in 2013.
He scored crucial goals against Elfsborg and Shakhter Karagandy as Neil Lennon’s squad made it to the group stages.
Commons drifted in and out of the team in the early days of Deila’s reign as they suffered Champions League heartbreak last summer.
But he eventually forced his way back in and became an influential presence in the Norwegian’s new-look side.
Deila rewarded Commons with a two-year contract extension and will hand him an important role in this year’s qualifying bid — should he recover from this setback.
