My partner has a condition which requires regular medication that she needs to maintain a near normal lifestyle and I couldn't be more grateful that we have the NHS. If she lived in a country with privatised health care there is absolutely no chance any insurance companies would touch her and her condition would become debilitating. The medication she is on is expensive and we couldn't afford it out of our own pockets in a million years. As for me, any time I've had to go to the Doctors or the hospital, the service has been exemplary. A+E staff look as if they are run bo-ragged but they get it done.

That £800 in taxes is minuscule in comparison to knowing I don't have to worry whether I can afford having treatment imo.

The service does have its problems but I'd say most of those are due to severe budget cuts and constraints, mismanagement, and as a Scootz says, a 'taken-for-granted' attitude among the populace.

NHS is a great thing to have and we should be * grateful for it and all the staff who work in it.
Its not the NHS that's put it in the condition it is today but years of abuse by our government past and present who don't really give a *.

Funding cut year after year and of course it is going to suffer, and if you add onto that the extra demand all those incoming from Europe its no wonder the old girl is creaking and groaning at her edges.

While our current government its trying to reduce funding to the point of collapse while sneaking in the ttip through the back door to open up the market to private medical companies from the states its no wonder we are staring at the end of the nhs in england.

This of course will then lead to the down fall of the nhs in scotland as our budget is tied directly to the nhs funding in england.

Bring down one you will also end the other.

Cant wait for the day when a broken leg or arm sets you back a years wages.............good old tories.

Ive found with the NHS (where I live) the GP surgery is crap but if you can get beyond the GP (when its needed) then the NHS is pretty good. I ended up telling the Dr at the GP surgery (after 3 visits over a 6 months) that I didn't believe a word he said and I wasn't leaving his room until he referred me to a specialist. Surprise surprise I was right and he was wrong but ive been happy with the NHS (outside the local GP surgery) since. I dread having to go to the GP surgery about anything else though.

I remember the days when you would call the surgery and you would actually be given an appointment there & then, usually for later that same day.

Now it seems as though doctors are actively trying their best to avoid patients.

I've visited my former local surgery since returning from overseas and the one thing that struck me about it was how empty it was. Most of the seats in the waiting room weren't filled.

Thankfully enough they did, but not because of any great NHS service. They got the treatment they required because I paid for them to be seen by my doctor. I called in the morning, and both of them were seen in person that afternoon.

I guess the old saying of "you get what you pay for" really does apply in this case.

I tell you what, I'd hate to be an older person living in Britain in this day & age when it comes to health care.

I personally believe that people should be given the choice of where their tax money goes when it comes to aspects like health care and education.

If you don't believe the NHS is up to scratch you should be given the choice to spend that money elsewhere, be it towards private healthcare or whatever.

The same goes with schooling. Hospitals, GP's, schools and other services don't really have to be arsed about treating their customer with respect, because they know they're getting the money anyway.

If you don't like your doctor it's not as if you can take your money and go elsewhere, is it? So why should he give a * what you think about his service? He's being paid regardless.

I find it absolutely ludicrous that people basically have their money taken from them by the government and are then expected to look at the shoddy services offered by the NHS and consider themselves * lucky to have it!

"You should feel lucky to have that service that every single * in employment has to pay for!"

Didn't know where to stick this..

Missus mum has battled and beat breast cancer only for bowel cancer to surface and spread months later.

So, so many mistakes from the hospital it's unbelievable. They were gonna operate down 1 side to fit a cavity so she could manage it at home but not only did they operate on the wrong side but bust a blood artery that caused a minor stroke. The reason they got it wrong was that they had the wrong file and it didn't have my missus mum's name on it.

My missus brother is a nurse and questioned everything as he could see many faults before they happened and then started recording some of the conversations which were again, unbelievable..

I'm only repeating some major mistakes amongst the many others, from repeatedly telling my missus they could operate and send her home to changing there mind repeatedly , then saying they couldn't and she wouldn't last 2 weeks..
    She died this morning..

    *..

How can the NHS run properly when the Health Minsiter gets information given to him that's wrong by the organisations that are meant to run the NHS.

THE NHS is like everything else.

    Some good and some bad.

Unfortunatley they are dealing with peoples lives and some incompetent * slip through the net and get employment with them.

My mum was a nurse all her working life and she was telling me the other day how even in the 1960's in Glasgow some doctors would cancel ops that was booked in for that week or even in a few days time and replace the NHS planned ops with the doctors own private patients.
These patients then expected the nurses to run around after them giving them the special private care the doctor had been paid for.
