Giving beggers money- would you or wouldnt you.

Discussion in 'TalkCeltic Pub' started by Drakhan, Oct 14, 2014.

  1. If a beggar came up to you reeking of drink and asks you for money for drink would you give them it.
If they came up and asked for money for food would you give them it.

For the first YES for the 2nd NO.

  2. Never do. Used to donate to a shelter in my hometown regularly. Since I've moved I've fallen out of the habit. But I never give to those on the street

  3. I give whenever I can.

  4. I give quite often.

There was one time a guy came up to me. Said nice shirt, that's an old one (centenary away *) and asked me for some money. I said if you guess the year the shirt was from then yeh. He got it and I was puzzled all the way home, till I realised the badge has 1888-1988 on it :smiley-laughing002:

  5. Sometimes if I have change on me. I feel sorry for them when loads of people walk by and don't even look at them.

  6. Usually buy them food instead of giving money, don't know what some of them are really wanting cash for.

  7. If they are genuinely homeless then yeah. I think the best thing to do is talk to them.
Often genuinely homeless people don't beg - beggars these days more often than not see it as a job, or to fund their habit sadly.

If you ask them if they want a bag of chips and a coffee and they would rather have the money then they are at it.

  8. To be honest, if they ask me for 20p or whatever, I usually give them it, unless they are wearing a Sevco top then they get told to * off.

If I were to say no on the grounds that I were stereotyping them as worthless scroungers who will spend the money on booze, and they will only receive my money if it's under my terms and conditions (i.e. buying them food), I don't think I could class myself as any different from the Tory * who are trying to introduce these benefit vouchers :38:

Reminds me of a story of a wee guy I worked with, used to get the train into Central station every night for work - comes out, sees a wee transient guy sitting outside the entrance: no shoes, no jacket and his tshirt stretched over his knees, so the wee fella nips over to the Greggs gets him a cuppa tea and some sausage rolls, hands them to him and walks away. As the wee man was walking away, the wee tramp * threw the sausage rolls at him and started shouting "NOT HALAL, NOT HALAL!!!!!!"

And they say beggars can't be choosers............:56:

  9. I generally give if I've got change on me. Not bothered about what they spend it on.

  10. I've had a junkie woman come up to me and asked me for £100!

After my initial "Are ye havin a * laugh hen????" response, I asked what it was for, she said her boyfriend was in the nick and needed to get him out on bail as they were supposed to be goin to England the next day :56::56::56:

  11. I give, when I can, I dont care if they spend it on drink or drugs,

  12. Great post. If someone genuinely has reached the point where they feel they have to ask for money, whether for food, shelter or alcohol (and whether they are really homeless or not), then I don´t see how it can possibly be my place to judge whether that person is worthy or deserving.

FS, if anything could make me want to drink, having to beg for money would surely manage it.

And the halal story is interesting too. Some people assume that if you´re really desperate, you´ll eat anything, but if you´re having to beg for money, hanging onto as much dignity as possible must be a constant and vital struggle and, for a muslim, eating non-halal food would be a serious issue in that regard. I´m vegetarian and, unless I was in danger of death, I would also turn down a sausage roll.

  13. It depends , sometimes I do and sometimes I have went and bought a coffee , sandwich ,chippy etc.
I'm more likely to give money to someone with a dog as well, yep stupid way to make a decision. I have also been known to ask the person to come into the pub for a drink and a heat, when on a day/night out.

  14. Yeah ano but at the same time it's like.....well ye'v no even got any shoes mate, take a * sausage roll and shut the * up lololol

  15. I used to but not anymore because I'm not to far away from joining them much rather just throw money in a poor box

I like to think I don't but I know I do, especially when abroad. I somehow feel like I'll be more accepted by the country I'm in if I fling one of their homeless some euros or something.

  16. Never will give a begger money, but i have bought them Food and bought them coffee in the past.
