Referendums such as the one in Scotland don't come about too often, if people put national culture, history and pride above the financial sides of debate which I think a lot of Irish people would do then every country would be independent giving the chance.(Not a pop at the Scottish lads just the huns that voted no because they feel more "British" than Scottish or the * who were afraid of losing some money but never thought about the potential improvements they could have made to their kids lives.)

If I was given the chance to vote I'd vote for a united Ireland without researching financial repercussions or potential economical changes, call me stupid or whatever but that's just how I'd go about it.

"I was born in the island of Ireland. I have Irish traits in me - we don't all have the traits of what came from Scotland, there is the celtic factor... and I am an Irishman because you cannot be an Ulsterman without being an Irishman." - Ian Paisley.

"At first it was a bit scary because I didn't want to admit I was Irish. I didn't want anything to do with being Irish, I was British. But then I learned that I am Irish and I can reclaim all my Irishness, the Irish dancing, the Irish language, everything. That's as much part of me as it is to anybody in the nationalist community. I'm very proud to be a Protestant and very proud to be British, but I'm also very proud to be able to sit here and say, 'I'm Irish too' and have as much right to be as anyone." - Ms Anderson, Ballybeen Community Theatre.

Was Daniel O'Connell not an Irishman? The man who was very proud of being Irish and a subject of the British Empire? You cannot colour Irish nationalism and Unionism under ethnic conflict. That's exactly what the British have done and look where it's landed us all. The poliitical situation has nothing to do with ethnic identity. It's to do with political identity and aspirations.

An Irishman can be British and still be an Irishman. It's historically true, and it's true today as well.

And I refuse to let the British administration continue to frighten the Unionists of the north away from their Irish identity by portraying the issue along ethnic and sectarian lines.

So what happens (hypothetically speaking) if/when there is a United Ireland?
Do we still give these people who consider themselves to be British a voice to disrupt the process?
Who will inevitably call for the Island to reunite with the Union, what road that would take is anyone's guess, but going by the history of the island a call of arms would be the likely option.

If both sides of the border democratically elect to form a united Ireland, and if any one on either ends resorts to arms to disrupt that process, then they are terrorists and must be treated as such.

:smiley-laughing002: embarrassing, no need for it. I would vote for a United Ireland if I got the chance but I don't think people in the south will get to vote. I don't think its the right time now because we are only recovering. I think most nationalist will vote yes but, there will also be nationalists who no because of money.

Ireland would be much more economical attractive then the UK for the north that would sway a good bit of the unionist side and what happens if the UK leave the EU and as for the south if there was a famine on people would still vote yes

Would you say it would stop people up north from voting for sinn fein or get more I wouldn't say it would make to much of a different down here if they make Doherty head instead of Mary lou
