Just an observtion from reading the many posts over the last couple of years.....

A lot of folk on here seem to think we have the *-given right to be competing in the last 16/8/4 of the Champions League. But are Celtic really that strong?

I admit we have a great, no, out-*-standing European record at Paradise...which is no mean feat.

Celtic are an SPL team competing in the top league in Scotland, the only draw we have with potential signings is a stint in the CL, months of playing away to half-empty stadiums in the * ends of nowhere.

Do we expect too much of Celtic? Is this the reason many fans on here get frustrated when we don't make a "Kaka" signing before the transfer window slams shut?

I believe our team are more than capable of winning the SPL at a canter this year and for the next couple of years.....and excursions into the realms of the CL....that's the thing many Celtic fans are now expecting the team to progress in, has some focus coming away from the SPL? I admit the SPL does not offer the cash rewards of the CL, but for Celtic to dominate like they do.....I'd take that over CL progression from the group any day!

Would you call for WGS head to roll of we got to the last 8 and lost the league and cups, or would you be hailing him?

My own feelings are that the current team are an SPL winning side, and I will be more than happy if we win the SPL and a Scottish cup or two along the way...as for the CL, underestimate us at your peril......Enjoy the ride!:50:

I feel we have a SPL winning team, also our midfield is stronger this season than what it was last season i would say, but i feel we will struggle to score home & away in CL games as we needed a quality striker (as we seen on Wednesdays match) if it wasnt for Boruc theres a good chance we could have gone out, because we never took our goal scoring chances..

Everything said in the OP is spot on, the worst and best thing to happen to Celtic was Seville, it gave a lot of Celtic fans pride, but it gave a lot more a chip on their shoulder, and attitude that we are bigger than we actually are.

We are a big fish in a footballing backwater, we are probably the most famour club from our land, but play in a league so poor that attracting the type of player to compete at the business end of the CL in near impossible. Under MON, that one season with the run to Seville, we punched way above our weight. Anything we ever achieve in Europe will be a bonus, the only thing Celtic should ever look to do every season is contest the domestic trophies.

I mean some peope will say 'Milan took extra time to beat us' but thats exactly it, the guy that made the diff is worth about £40mil, last time i checked Celtic have never signed a guy for £40mil, and that there is why we will find it very difficult to get to quarters and semis, not saying its impossible, just if we do, it'll be a serious upset.

Until we can compete financially with the clubs that make up the semi's of the UCL (just look at pot one in the draw to see the money there) then yes perhaps we do expect to much, still that never stops us from punching above our weight and giving the cash rich teams a fright now and then!

I know there is not the same cash available in the SPL as in other leagues, and there never will be....

...so we gotta stop moaning about the transfers in and out of the club, cos it ain't gonna change anything. We buy what we can afford and what is available to us, and try to do good business and make some money on the outgoings as well.
IMHO, we had a very successful transfer window.

I am sick of ppl saying we need "blue-chip" players in, who is "blue-chip" in Celtic's eyes? Guys like Scott Brown, and Massimo Donati, that's who. They will prove to be the players of the year in the SPL this year.

Lets get back to reality here guys, we will never have the same money as the likes of the EPL teams have, and to be honest, I don't want it, greed is the downfall of many a good man and club!

So, here's to playing in and winning the SPL.....and hoping that we can have a good run in the CL...because, we can HOPE, and not demand!:84:

no i dont think i do. i know some people do.
people who think we can sign adriano etc are just idiots.
we(non idiots) dont expect our club to get in to the final of the champions league, or win the eufa cup every season.
we expect a good fight for the last 16, then it depends on the draw weather we expect the last 8.
this season, if we get the last 16 i'll be amazed.
signing wise, no i dont think we do. we spent aprox 8mil and recived aprox 5mil. so we spent approx 3 million. were as rangers spent the same amount and recived less. if infact , anything. so on that front yes i'd have expected celtic, the apprerent richer of the two right now to be spending more.
though, if we get to the last 16 and win the leauge it will prove to be the correct desicion not signing more players due to us then having more money to spend next season. but if we dont people will be very unhappy.

as for the sale of kenny miller and balencing the books... i dono * thats all about. is it ... well, we could have made 4.6million selling brown, so we'll sell miller for 3 to cover the loss that was never really a loss, just not a gain.

As celtic fans and the supporter of a big club( in the ways of a business and popularity) we can only be optimistic and think we can be the best.
In the head to head contest will milan last year we came 0-0 but we could of won if we got that peno at the end.
Those type of displays can get us trhough europe and we can always hope on luck.
TO me a great achievment would b the league( a must IMO) a cup and last 16. I think it would be wonderful and would propell us further in the rankings and make us more attrative that we have gottent there again and hopefully make us a bigger targert for big palyers.

I dont always expect too much but i always want Celtic to do the best as they can, if im honest i didnt think they would beat Milan over the 2 legs but i still supported them an cheered them on to try and prove myself wrong.

Yes we want them to do well and win everything , even when its not possible buts thats what the fans are for we give the club and players the backing to strive forward onto better things.

yes i think we should expect to be in with the big boys, reason being whats the point in supporting a team that dosent reach for the highest hights that can be achieved,

and the players must want to be tested everyday or at least try there best against the very best

so coupled with the team trying there best

and the club trying there best
we should expect it every year ,and a lot of people would be gutted if we dident make it from now on

our bench mark is the last 16 we should strive to that at least then try and progress further ,eventually winning the * thing

Yes - the benchmark is the last 16, as we've already done that. It won't be a disaster if we drop into the Uefa Cup, but bottom of the group would be.

As to the SPL, winning it is the only option. If we were to lose it against Watty's mob of second raters (not one of their team would get into ours) that would be a disaster.

Expectations now, admittedly higher than pre-Seville, are: at least Uefa drop in the CL group and SPL winners.

But we can hope for more, surely?

Lets go way back to 94, just before McCANN stepped in. Can anyone honestly say they expected we would be doing as well as we have done so far?

Think we all know the answer so be happy!:50:
