The Brown story from the Daily *:

    31 August 2007
£9M BROWN BID REJECTED BY CELTIC
    [IMG]
EXCLUSIVE: Celtic reject massive Premiership club bid
    By Keith Jackson
CELTIC kicked out an incredible £9million bid for new boy Scott Brown just hours before their Champions League fate was secured on Wednesday night.
Record Sport can reveal the offer - a one-off cash payment - was made by a third party ahead of the Parkhead club's qualifier against Spartak Moscow.
It's believed a Premiership club sanctioned the move, with the likes of Everton, Newcastle, Middlesbrough and Spurs all known admirers of the player signed from Hibs for £4.5m just two months ago.
It is understood Celtic chief executive Peter Lawwell rejected the deal instantly and did not even bother to ask the third party for the identity of the mystery club.
Brown went on to play his part in Celtic's dramatic penalty shoot-out victory over the Russians which has secured Celtic a £10m windfall from UEFA's most lucrative event.
With the transfer window still open until tonight at midnight, Celtic could have raked in a massive profit by doubling their financial outlay on the 22-year-old.

But Lawwell and manager Gordon Strachan have made it clear they will not entertain any improved offer, no matter how large, for a player who is already a central figure in their latest rebuilt team.
Meanwhile, Thomas Gravesen has returned to Everton just over two years after his shock move from Goodison to Real Madrid.
The 31-year-old has been signed on a year-long loan from Celtic and is clearly the midfield re-enforcement manager David Moyes wanted after his attempts to sign Manuel Fernandes from Benfica collapsed at the weekend.
Gravesen has been out of favour at Celtic for some time and the subject of transfer speculation involving Sheffield United and Fulham this summer.
The Denmark international first moved to Goodison from Hamburg for £2.5m but with his contract due to expire in the summer of 2005, Everton sold the player to Real Madrid for £2.5m in January of that year.
But now he is back on Merseyside, where he became a cult figure among Toffees fans. He said: "I am looking forward to going back to Everton, it is a chance to play top-flight football in the English Premiership again."
Gravesen moved to Celtic in 2006 where he has had a chequered time. He has not figured in any of their matches this season.

9m, *! You could never imagine a bid like that for a young Scottish player a year or to ago - the crazy money in the prem might benefit us long term after all!

Dont want Brown to leave for a gd few seasons, looks the real deal. If he continues to progress imagine what we'd be offered in a few years time.

Good to see the suits have got some common sense and turning down what is a lot of money for the sake of building a team that can compete with the best.
