Small-town Eibar to be punished for their success?

Here is a blog from ESPN worth reading. It sums up just what is wrong with modern football when a club that lives well within its means and is performing miracles on the pitch is being punished for its success. It's a story about a little Basque club that gained promotion into the Spanish top flight for the next season. If they will let them, that is. Money makes the football world go round. Even if it's money you owe. The number just has to be high enough apparently.

And a picture to get you even more excited if you are still hesitating if the article is worth your time. :86:

Good read. Hopefully they can raise the cash, seems an odd rule

Hopefully the likes of David Silva and Xavi Alonso could help them out.

The rule seems outdated and bias towards the struggling bigger teams. Crazy.

that is a shocking rule to have. This club have done above and beyond in getting to a league through a merit and never having debt. Yet, because half the division, who have been poorly run, make more money and this has to be met by all teams.
    Poor rule.

Hope they make it as they deserve to be there.

http://www.defiendealeibar.com/ if anyone wants to donate at all.

Seems they have raised 750k so far, another 1million to go - with good publicity and given a bit of time they could make it.

"The Escocia la Brava supporters' club was born out of a trip in 2001 to watch the Five Nations rugby, during which a group of Eibar fans became enamoured with the atmosphere and tried to replicate it here. A couple of times a year, Scots join them in Eibar for games.

"Wearing kilts and wigs, taking photos by the mural," laughs the supporters' club president Joseba Combarro."

    That's me out.

This article also got me thinking of what a quality team you can build if people who run the club know what they are doing. Their budget is the smallest of any team in the first or second Spanish division, yet they will probably be crowned Liga Adelante champions (at this point they are 2 points ahead of Deportivo la Coruna with two games to go) and playing some good football. For example, this season, they managed to beat Real Madrid Castilla (their second team) 6:0 at home and 1:0 away and the beat Barca B 2:0 away and drew with them at home. They also beat Deportivo la Coruna, Zaragoza and so on, all clubs, which are light years away in the terms of finances and size.

So I can't see why Celtic, a club with a budget more than a hundred times bigger than Eibar's, couldn't do something similar when it comes to playing attractive and modern football. If Eibar proves anything, is that with a capable leadership, a manager with a vision and a good selection of players you can build a very good team without having to splash millions on players.

Good luck to them. I'd love to see us arrange a friendly game to raise funds for their cause.

    Great idea.

Shows how * football is when a team as admirable as Eibar might not make it to the top.

Did they do it? Superb. Hope all goes well for them. Would have even tragic for the best team not to get promoted.

I'm not sure if it's a "* you" to the money men, they still got their money. A "* you" would be them refusing promotion and the next teams up supporting them by refusing also.
