Anyone as good as Shaun will cost an absolute fortune unless we unearth a great unknown. Wee Shaun was skillful, very fast, brilliant at deaballs, cracker shot, scored plenty, two footed, great football brain. Thats basically the complete player. We were very short sighted. Thats the one black mark against Lawwell in my book (otherwise he is the dog's gonads). I agree with the dude who is saying if his name was something like Shauninho Malonopolis he would have got the dosh no bother.

I`d have him back. Was gutted to see him go.

He left the club. Get over it. He was offered more money and a chance to play in one of the biggest leagues in the world. I`d like to think I would stay with Celtic but until you`ve been in that situation I don`t think its fair to judge.

And why anyone would boo a Celtic player on the park is beyond me.

I would accept him back, he plays better than Mcgeady and can score crackers.

Aston Villa manager Martin O'Neill has denied striker Shaun Maloney is poised to return to Celtic. Maloney, 24, has struggled to settle in the Midlands and has started only five games for the English Premier League club since his £1m move in February.
"Shaun is definitely a bit homesick and it's something the media in Scotland seem to pick up on on a daily basis," said O'Neill.
"But I've spoken to Shaun and no-one is going anywhere."
O'Neill said Maloney was a part of his future plans, adding that he was looking to strengthen his squad before the transfer window closes on Friday.
"This is the first time that Shaun has really been away from home. But I do not envisage Shaun leaving. He has a future to play with us."
Former Celtic manager O'Neill said Maloney was not the only ex-Celt who had moved to the English Premier League club.
"Stilian Petrov came down here along with some of my staff. We all have to move around."
Maloney, who was Player of the Year and Young Player of the Year in the Scottish Premier League in 2005/06, has also been linked with a move to Roy Keane's Sunderland.

Some of you don't realise although he's supposed to be such a class player he's hardly been successfull at an average english club. why? Homesick is a bit of a cheap excuse, it's basically the same country (I know I know :84:), about a few hours away from his family. It's not like he had to learn a new language and down south there was such a different culture. He's not a youngster anymore, he's already 24.5 years old.

He had one great season for us, dunno if he's an one-season-wonder or injury prone, I thought he was skilled but he certainly seems to be a * pansy.

Its like me moving to Pittsburgh or New York... Why would I be homesick?

Inconsistency. He's had some good games (including one where we was playing deep holding midfield, which surprised me), but overall has seemed to struggle to impose himself.

There are probably more complaints from fans about him than about any other player at the moment, partly because it seems MON insists on playing him even when he's not doing well. Current feeling on messageboards is that Maloney more deserves a starting place then Petrov.

Being nowhere near your family or friends. That's what homesickness is. It doesn't mean missing seeing the grass everyday lol

I think (reading between the lines of what Shaun and MON have said) that Shaun is fishing for a return but MOn doesnt want that.

Agreed! I think SM might have even said to MON that he wants to come back, but MON knows how good he is and knows he could not replace him for what we will give him! And with MON's man managment skill he could convince him to stay, jings I bet that he could convince me that I could play pro football! This is one transfer saga that nobody can predict! Stroll on the 2nd!

I think the homesickness thing is rubbish. As has been said he is only an hour in the plane or 4 hours by car away, it's the same language and he knows the management team plus Stan. He's 24 and a millionaire, it's not like he is some 18 year old kid going to uni. We have just signed a 16 year old from Italy who has the balls to come over here to a different culture and language and is definitely not on 26 grand a week like Maloney.

Sometimes i find it embarrassing how parochial our footballers are. Hardly any of them go abroad and the ones that do almost always improve as players. I thinking of Brewster, Jamie Smith, O'Connor..eh thats about it. I knew as soon as it happened that Riordan made a huge mistake not going to the Budesliga. In stead of playing there at a high standard he plays in the reserves for us and gets arrested in pubs.

Rant over, don't think MON will want to sell the club's top scorer on the cheap. He bagged a brace tonight in the Carling cup.

:50: yes agreed, Maloney should get his head out his * and realise he has the chance to become a better player than he currently is, he's done himself plenty of favours with his goals tonight and his winner at the weekend.

Riordan should also have made the leap as i don't think he'll make the long awaited breakthrough at CP this season, unfortunately. The bhoys talented and its a shame he's not given more of a run out, however if he gets the chance to leave he should give it a long hard thought...:34:
