Don't care about companies histories to be honest, just want to get a job in any finance/oil company.

The job market for oil graduates in Aberdeen isn't quite as rosy as some people make out (although there are definitely jobs in some fields - you'll find that all the major oil companies are usually wanting you to have a Masters).

I got a job with Baker Hughes offshore but was laid off before I even started. They made me wait 2 months while they kept delaying my start date and then I received an email from HR in Dubai saying that I would no longer be considered for the position with no explanation. Took me days to get ahold of anyone as they conveniently sent the email at 4.59pm the day before a week long Dubai holiday.

Safe to say I was pretty gutted. I got a job doing geo-environmental work in Glasgow though, which pays a bit less but it's experience and I earn enough to live fairly comfortably. Finding an affordable flat in a decent area has been a struggle though.

Would that have been the former BJ services that Baker bought?

    They aren't doing too well.

As for Baker, their recruitment and treatment of people is pretty grim.

Not as far as I know.

I would have been in the Surface Logging department.

Could always do some course through a college man, I used to do * all but smoke weed in the school toilets, the only thing is I'm what people would call naturally intelligent and just a lazy *. Even did my English GCSE high for some inspiration, it did not give me any and I failed it. Sometimes drugs aren't the inspiration for work :smiley-laughing002:

2 of my family are nurses, dont know how much they get paid but its quite good id imagine as they've both got nice houses that are paid for. Ones my auntie and another cousin, my auntie goes on holiday all the time to New York etc and she lives alone, always goes away for the weekend too about once a month and Cousin goes to all the European away games and must go on about 5 holidays a year, Dubai etc also sits in the fancy seats at Celtic Park and is a shareholder who gets 2 tickets for every away game.

Ones been a nurse fucknos how long id guess atleast 30 years and the other has been one for maybe 17/18 years.

Quite hard jobs though, stressful, im not actually sure what area my auntie works in - she never talks about it but my cousin works with kids with cancer and they regularly die, a lot of the time she works over night and all that and she takes them places and gets to know them really well and their families.

    "1. Head Of Major Organisation
Includes: CEOs and presidents leading organisations of more than 500 people.
    Median gross pay: £84,453.
    Annual change: +5.6%.
    Pay range: £23,388 (10th percentile) to £126,229 (75th percentile)."

Some of these look rather funny. Especially number 1. Sadly I am not a chief exec but I have worked closely with some. To give an example of a chief exec salary, an old company of mine's chief exec earned around £300k basic and that was running a company that was one of the smallest in the FTSE 100 with around 350 staff. And that was way below average for a FTSE 100 company.

In my current company my boss will earn around £100k basic and he reports to his boss who reports to the chief exec. But that is a company of around 1500 people. Many managers not even close to CEO and president roles earn around £84k in finance.

Similarly, it says the lowest earning person in this range surveyed earned just over £23k to run a company with more than 500 people! That is either complete nonsense or the number doesn't account for bonuses of hundreds of percent, share issues, etc.

I also know plenty of Sales and Marketing Directors in investments and their basics are in line with what is listed here. But these roles typically earn huge bonuses - anywhere between 20-70% so again this is only based on basic salary.

Listing professions by basic salary doesn't mean much as a doctor might earn £75k while a salesman might earn £60k, but after bonuses the sales director will earn more.

    P.S I wish I was a pilot...

My wife's a neonatal nurse and has been for 2 years and is on 21k. Not a great wage to be honest when she's working 4 12.5 hour shifts in a week!

Agree these figures look wrong, Especially as you say the finance 1.
A good percentage of IFA's earn more than what they are reporting in this article.

Would second that post about jobs in Aberdeen not being as easy to come by as its made out.

I came out of uni with a mechanical engineering qualification and got a job for a year in a big explosives factory working as a Design Draughter. Good experience.

Started applying for other jobs after the first year. Managed to get 3 interviews in Aberdeen, some were for lower paid jobs but training towards management positions, others were engineering etc. The trainee jobs I couldnt take because the money was low. No doubts it would have been much better in a while but I would have had to make do in Aberdeen on an £18k salary which is difficult. Another job was for a Jnr project engineer, salary of £26k, ended up not getting it due to experience. Then had another interview for a draughter job with subsea7 on their changeover programme, didnt get that due to experience either.

I got lucky down here though, had 7 interviews in Glasgow in a short space of time. Ended up with 3 or 4 job offers down here for various engineering positions, with salaries ranging from £22k to £24k. Id say thats fairly normal after speaking to everyone else who I went through uni with.

Some nurses are good and deserve a bit more.

Some are horrible * and deserve nothing.

    Kyogo. A phenomenon

Haha, in filthy Oil and gas i'm afraid.....but as a graduate engineer, a lot of places will have that as a starting rate. They have to, because at present there's not enough guys to even fill the roles.
