They have had a few in Quebec. What happens if the next generation wants independence - can't be conclusive.

I'm not convinced an independent scotland will be any better, it just can't be much worse than it is now

Yes people are living longer but i don't see the body handling hard work at 70 any different in 30 years time.
I would rather they put tax up a little to pay for it than just making people work and work and work.
In a ideal world for london you will work till 70 retire then go into a home at 71 sell your house to pay for your care then die at 72 leaving your family to pay 40% tax on anything left.

No way, i am not giving up half my life just to receive measly portions from a corrupt government. Luckily for me i am what most would call a saver, i do spend quite a bit but i always look to save and hopefully that stands me in good stead over my life.

In addition * having too many kids, 2 max.

Retirement can come much sooner if people look after their finances. Too many people still have the vast, vast majority of their income as disposable, ready to spend it on * clothes that will be out of style in a few months, expensive branded technology, booze etc.

Control your expenditures and most importantly your expectations and you'll retire early and live a much more contented life.

Its completely acceptable to do this.Fuxake, when i was a wean nobody's Granny or Grandpa was even alive after 70.(not literally)You worked all your days and if you were lucky you got as couple of years after your retirement and died.It was the norm.
People are living to 30 years past their retirement age now, and we as a society are demanding better and better care for them when they end up in homes etc.(rightly so)It is ludicrous to expect the present and next generation to be burdened with such an expense when people are clearly more healthy these days than in the past.I have a couple of mates in their early 60's and they could clearly work for another 20 years.
Obviously it depends on whether you have a physical job or not, but still, we are all living longer and this needs to be done, and i have absolutely no doubt any future Scottish govt will do the exact same thing and raise the age.

On another issue, i think it is completely disgusting that women get to retire earlier than men. What happened to equality?

I think that 1% of the population, who're so very well off, making these decisions for the rest of us is pretty * poor! Ok as time goes on modern living and medicine improve but by and large we will still die from much the same maladies as we do today. People will still lead lifestyles that will impact on their heath and I don't envisage anyone inventing a cure all pill anytime soon.

A lot of people just aren't built to wear their bodies out. Take me as an example. I have worked since I was 15 years of age until 3 years ago. I have taken time out to care for an elderly mum. I have never claimed a red cent off anyone in my life and always worked hard. Now I could have carried on in my job had I not stopped at that point but pause to think .........who want's a 68-70yr old nurse running up and down a ward?

Would I be fit enough at that age? The job is very demanding physically and very stressful ..would I be able to cope? Aside from the workplace problems I am an ageing woman (gracefully I might add) with all the problems that entails. It wouldn't be long before personal problems started to impact on my performance at work. Does that picture instill confidence? If I were sitting at a desk would all of this affect me in the same way? I doubt it. I would most likely have all the woman stuff to come but I would be able to deal with it at a better pace. Trouble is I only know how to do one thing and I have done that for over 30 years....if there's easier work out there it's not going to me! Bosses want young things they can mould not someone who's older and has already formed their opinions about life.

Either way raising the retirement age can't be good. Older people will try to hang on in there when they have a job and younger folks wont be able to get a job.

Ha ha...... it does bug me though!
I think to counter the fact that a few elderly people may not be able to find work, technically it will mean they will be able to claim unemployment benefit until 68!

Im going to struggle myself as i do physical work, but i knew this was coming 20 years ago.It has to, it was inevitable.

I would love it if some who didnt actually need it didnt claim it.Maybe there could be some sort of way of dispensing it publicly.......and then those who think they are big shots, would maybe be too embarrassed to be seen to claim it!!!

Gonna work for as long as possible. Hopefully I'll have an easier/more specialist job nailed down before then.

I just going to add something here,we have at least 3 engineers around the 60+ Mark that still work in our team, you cant send them to work on there own, have to watch what they do can't lift * all.

We have around 6 guys between 35 to 50 mark

This puts extra strain on the younger workers and the management know this in terms of work force we look good but we are 3 men down in reality Nothing can be done about this I would hate to think when we are all hitting our 60s a work force good for * all

    Governments are wrong here.

If you want to retire earlier then save for earlier retirement. I read somewhere last year that something like 10% of folk in the uk are planning on winning the lottery as a retirement plan. That is an incredible indictment on the hand out culture this country has developed.
