The first comment is all you need to read:

They didn't give a link, or a source, just "gangster says there will be violence" and then pictures of a huge protest by teachers demanding better pay. I wouldn't worry about it too much beyond the normal chances for crime in Brazil (which are, admittedly, larger than they should be).

Was headline in the Metro as well and no doubt others.

Typical scare stories that seem regular these days ahead of a big tournament - albeit this one has started early, we're not even in the World Cup year yet! Remember all the scare stories about South African Olympics, Poland/Ukraine Euros etc. Just as well the 2012 Olympics were held in London.

What might be more interesting is if we see the kind of protests we saw during the confederations cup. Certainly would put a lot of pressure on the Brazilian government with the whole world watching.

The protests will continue (they never stopped, currently there is a major teachers strike - BBC Hotlink) during the World Cup. In fact they will probable intensify. The mass desire to protest things is now a part of Brazil's culture. We seen a country change before our eyes last year.

The protests at the World Cup will also be spread over a bigger area as more cities will be focal points. Such as Cuiabá, deep in the interior state of Mato Grosso. It's a city with no major football teams yet some $450 million has been spent on the new Arena Pantanal. While at the same time infrastructure is poor.

I seen Tim Vickery on SSN talking about how everything is going to be expensive in Brazil etc about the world cup when he came out with this cracker...

"In my twenty years here ive only been involved in two unsavoury incidents, two times when I was robbed at gunpoint" :56::56:
