Volunteering may be an option to get experience.

Jobs, including part time ones, are vastly over-subscribed just now and you will find it difficult. There's a LIDL being built in Kirky just now that's had over 500 applications in 2 days for 20 jobs. Which is the same for the Hard Rock Cafe being built in the town and just about every other retailer that's opening as jobs are hard to come by.

Be creative and determined, go walk round places with your CV and ask to speak to managers. You will jump yourself to the front of the queue.

My partner has worked in care homes for the best part of 18 years mate, we have been together all of that time, so I reckon I have a good knowledge of what it is like, all be it second hand.

Sure the hours are long and at times it is a thankless task but the real reward is the human connections that are made in caring for people who aren't able to care for themselves. This is the great experience I talk of. For someone at 17 to experience what it is like for people at the end of life will only set him in good stead for whatever life may throw at him in the future.

My Mrs loves "her wee patients" and loves being there for them when they need her most. The families appreciate the work that she does (even if the employer doesn't) and she has made good friends of some families through her work.

The job does not teach people to abuse other people, * will be * regardless, but good people can and do make a difference to other peoples lives on a daily basis.

I've yet to see a genuinely happy shelf stacker, at least in helping someone you get the genuine reward of thanks from the family and maybe a smile from the person your caring for. That in itself is priceless.

At the end of the day, its a place where old people are and they need caring for by good compassionate people. If the wee guy thinks he could look after some little old people a couple of days a week and earn a wage while doing it then theres a job there waiting for him.

He seems to be needing the work so if there is nothing else happening its well worth a shot in my opinion.

retail is your best bet i think. Although glasgow does not have a lot of jobs right now. I mean comparing it to where i live and in Aberdeen alone there are 60 vacancies for Sainsburys by themselves. Then there is tesco's morrisons etc... loads of part time jobs up here but i do know from friends in glasgow that its a difficult place to find a job of any kind.

Give the royal mail a try, they are always taking on Christmas workers up and down the country. Even though it's only a few weeks, it's still decent money and experience.

What a load of * ! How the * would he learn to abuse people? I don't know about your experiences but obviously they haven't been good. You cannot tar all the carers and carehomes with the one brush just because you have a certain opinion on them

Its certainly a job that I could not do, Your Mrs sounds like a very caring and kind person. Also reckon, as said if he is suited, it would teach him a lot for later in life. Dont think they are all run as "farms" like some would say either. :smiley-laughing002:

The abuse training is shown on the 3rd and 4th days ,dont you know  :smiley-laughing002:

Yeah I seen them in a jobs day I went to for Christmas jobs to get some extra cash hopefully. Other places advertising were Argos and several other shops in silverburn. Marks and Spencer are recruiting 300 people for Christmas alone at Braehead and more at Silverburn. I believe they it will be on their website near the end of October or the start of November.

How the * is it a load of *? Please tell me?

When I say he will learn to abuse people, I don't mean he will be taken to a class and taught "ABUSE 101" - as an inexperienced 17 year old, he has no formal training. He will get some * week course (roughly, and if he's lucky!) about values, * protection and health and safety - courses he "can't" fail. He'l then be thrown in to support people who he has no * knowledge of the person or the background (will be forced to read up on them as he goes) and will then be learning from the person he is shadowing - will more than likely end up taking bad habits and bad habits that will lead to what is classed as "absue". Something as simple as making a wrenching sound when cleaning up * can be classed as abuse (just an example).

But aye, suppose you know better.

My apologies for being presumptuous - good post.

Obviously there are genuine people working in these places - and it's good to know that your missus has plenty of experience - so she will most definitely have seen the bad along with the good. Yes, the satisfaction of doing a good turn for one of your service users is absolutely fantastic, but in general I would say the overall practice within care homes (as a whole - people can moan about my comments all they wish, I couldn't care less) is poor. I'm also griping about the fact that (take this example) a 17 year old with no experience can walk off the street and get a job taking care of a person with individualized needs - how exactly is he/she competent after a weeks training and a bit of shadowing? Same goes if the person was 35/45/55 etc. Far too many people working in these institutes who have very little experience, not a care in the world, and of course the bad * (some genuinely cracking people working in them too) - and make no mistake, the people who live in these care homes ARE cash cows - the care home provider makes excessive amounts of cash from having them as residents - say roughy anywhere from £1k - £3k per month!

Aye sure he probably could get a job no bother, as long as he's willing to clean up *, *, vomit and blood. If he ends up working with peple who've learning disabilities, let's hope he's capable of handling the same faecal matter and fluids, as well as cleaning up * and is capable of phyisically defending himself.

why are you being so presumptious? That he would pick up bad habits from his trainer how can you say that when you don't know who is training the person. There are far more good people in this profession than there are bad and they have all had to go through the same training that you are talking about. Most people that start as a carer have little or no experience of looking after or cleaning up after vulnerable people and have to learn as they go along. In my opinion the vast majority of people in this industry are caring people and they should be praised for the work that they do,they have now become indispensible in this day and age and as such they should be paid accordingly.I understand that you may have issues with this type of work, but other people don't and are willing to work there. If you do not recommend anyone to put a family member in one of these places where would you suggest they go if the people can't look after them themselves?

You've probably got a point there, my young lass was 16 when she started, it was the first time the home had taken on someone so young, there was quite a few times during the first couple of months when she would come home in tears due to some of the residents personal situations but to her credit she seemed to harden up to the situation quite quickly, she now loves her job, although she's probably become to close to the residents now, she's heartbroken when any of them passes away.
So, yeah the lad would have to be quite a strong character to enter into this sort of employment.

Applied for another handful of jobs over the past two days probably due knockback after knockback but cant do any harm haha!

Been trying to avoid McDonalds for ages if im brutally honest but I decided to go or it and apply... in this economy you certainly canny be picky :smiley-laughing002:

The care home was an interesting one aswell, I will certainly look into it. Not sure if its my kind of thing but I dont think applying would do any harm. I imagine it could be quite a brutal atmostphere at times but I think after a while I could get used to it tbh.

Anyway thanks alot for the ideas peeps great help as always :celt_2:

Its honestly not that bad once you looks past: the * pay, the * hours, * you receive from customers, the * you receive from the boss's and the * conditions.

    :fear:

Just kidding - its actually quite funny and a good laugh and they fit the hours around your schedule.

Shirt dress trousers no tie for response. Make sure you take part in the assessment & they see that but don't cut people off when talking or take over the show. I was with 2 guys that tried to do that & none of them got a job with response

Response were the ones who put me through for a job with Vital Rail about 11 years ago. I got my PTS card and worked at night on the railway lines replacing track and sleepers. Hard work but good pay at that time. £14.50 an hour for an 8 hr shift 11 years ago. I had no qualifications except an Arithmetic O level.

Just listen to what the people are saying and fill out all the forms and that, it's not that difficult you should get through it no bother.

I worked for Response before and when I went to the assessment it seemed like a bit of a formality. They left me in a room with a pile of forms and I just filled them out and that was that.

I didn't even remember applying for the job in the first place. I got a phone call out the blue one day and after about 10 minutes the woman said "Well done you've passed the phone interview".

I didn't even know it was a phone interview until that point. :smiley-laughing002:
