Looking at the best comedy TV show thread got me thinking. What country is responsible for the best comedy exports? A lot of people in Canada seem to think we are the kings of comedy, and while we do punch above our weight especially in putting out comedy actors, I think in terms of quality comedy and groundbreaking style, UK/Ireland takes it hands down. Just like music you guys always seem to be a step ahead. America obviously is a leader as well, as they are in most things - mostly due to sheer population - so it's always hard to bet against them.

    Notables:

    Canada

Jim Carrey, Mike Meyers, John Candy, Dan Aykroyd, Martin Short, Leslie Nielsen, Tommy Chong, Tom Green, Eugene Levy, Norm MacDonald, Rick Moranis, Seth Rogan, William Shatner, Matthew Perry, Micheal Cera, Trailer Park Boys, Kenny vs. Spenny, Kids in the Hall

UK/Ireland (this will be incomplete but I'll do my best)

Charlie Chaplin, John Cleese and the rest of the Pythons, Rowan Atkinson, Sacha Baron Cohen, Russel Brand, Ricky Gervais, Fawlty Towers, Father Ted, Black Adder, Simon Pegg, Vicar of Dibley, a ton of others that don't really get over the pond

    USA

Gene Wilder, Richard Pryor, Bill Cosby, Bill Murray, John Belushi, Chevy Chase, Steve Martin, Jack Nicholson, Jerry Seinfeld, Larry David, Robin Williams, Chris Farley, Will Ferrell, Dave Chappelle, Jack Black, Eddie Murphy, Adam Sandler, The Simpsons, South Park, most of Hollywood, tons of others

Of course everyone will have their favourites that aren't on the list but I did my best. So considering that and your own personal opinions, who takes the crown as the king of comedy?

    Just Scotland.

English comedians are rarely funny and usually childish. Kinda similar with US and Canada - they all try to do satire but only some can.

Don't really like any Irish/Welsh comedians - Aussie's are alright.

Sorry OP but you're not gonna get much votes for Canadia on here :56::50:

Voted UK as no one is beating Billy Connolly or Monty Python. Ever.

Nielsen is definitely the best Canada has to offer. Out of the rest I listed I would say Candy, Levy, Carrey, Meyers, Aykroyd and Short are also quality. I agree with a previous poster though, a lot of Canadian comedy is pretty immature.

Aside from hockey and weed, comedy is one of the only things we can take pride in as a nation though. We are a simple people. :smiley-laughing002:

Voted for UK as we are the only ones who have produced genuinely adventurous and ground-breaking comedy - stuff like Monty Python and Vic & Bob. The surreal stuff appeals to me a lot, but I know it doesn't translate very well in North America. That being said, I honestly think Trailer Park Boys is one of the most original and well-written comedies ever, so Canada get an honourable mention. Old Simpsons is hard to beat too.

Why are UK and Ireland counted as one country, yet USA and Canada are not?

Also I was expecting a wider range of countries like

    -USA
    -Canada
    -Australia
    -England
    -Wales
    -Scotland
    -Ireland
    -New Zealand
    -India

    Or something like that.

    I'll probably actually go Scotland.

UK/Ireland by a million miles, in terms of television.

Perhaps because the greatest Irish sitcom was a joint production between the two?
