Even Levein (and it's taking a lot for me to pay that man any kind of footballing compliment) knew where to play Bannan. The best performances I've seen from him were in a Scotland jersey, because Levein mainly played him further up the pitch.

Haha, yeah, I know those kinds of players are the exception and not the rule, but Bannan's performances for Scotland - where he's by-and-large played in a more advanced, attacking role - would suggest to me that the 'deep-lying' role isn't for him.

You must be getting me mixed up with someone else mate - I haven't suggested he was a deep-lying midfielder.

I just stated that he was a central midfielder who plays best when being able to dictate the play and have the freedom to play killer passes.

Good wee player, but would not fit into this current Celtic team.

McLean on the other hand would be well suited to rampage our left wing.

I never said you were suggesting that - I'm saying that's the reason he hasn't been setting the heather alight for Villa this season, imo. That bit in bold has pretty much been my point throughout. For me, wee need a killer pass through the middle more than we lack pace on the wings. I'd like to see us add both, of course, but if you were asking me to spend £2m on an attacking mid from the EPL, it'd be Bannan.

    Ahh....got ye now :50:

To be honest I haven't watched a lot of the English leagues this year, Aston Villa included.

If we were to take him on loan I'd maybe have him, but I don't think he's any better than what we have currently, and I think we have youngsters like Jamie Lyndsay who I'd rather have playing.

Tbh i know * all about McLean other than that he's a mad rebel. For that reason alone we should sign him, misprounce his name, & sing the following rhyme: James McLean, hates the queen. James McLean, hates the queen.
    Rollover Stokesy's da!
Also, if he can CROSS A * FOOTBALL (i'm looking at you Izzy) then we should go in for him.

No chance Peter Lawell authorising this signing. To much baggage for Scotland, never mind his wages or appropriate transfer fee.

Derry city also have a sell-on clause in his contract with the tee-siders

I've seen him once or twice, is he not just a really * version of Pirlo?

I don't think McLean is very good, admittedly I haven't seen much of him.

Would he benefit/improve the team?? granted we do need a left winger, but we should be going for one that is a step-up from the rest of the team and I don't think he is.

He would add a different dimension to the left side of midfield.

He is very, very direct - no messing about, just gets the ball and gets it up the park for a cross.

Exactly what I like in a winger.

Seen a few people mention his wages. I honestly don't think his wages are that high.

Sunderland are closing in on the £1.25m signing of winger Charis Mavrias, 19, from Panithinaikos, paving the way for James McClean to join Celtic.

    So hope this is true.

I think you can file that one under fabrication, no unless we're breaking the mould and going with 3 wingers next season.

Can he play on the right hand side? If not then we would have 3 left wingers for the coming season

we just signed a left winger, why waste £2m on him when we need a goal scoring striker.

Thought we just signed a left winger. Out and out striker and cover for izzy at left back should be priority now.
