Racism ....

Discussion in 'TalkCeltic Pub' started by Jungo, Apr 22, 2013.

  1. Yea, I'm sure this is why Asians in the US and UK like to become doctors as it's a job where if you do well, you will be promoted, unlike a lot of others.

  2. I also think, in the case of the US at least, when it comes to customer service positions (depending on the neighborhood) you have to speak English and Spanish, or English and Filipino, or something like that. So in those cases it's not a matter of not hiring white people, it's hiring people with certain skills which I can understand. So many white people in this country have such an aversion to learning Spanish, but that skillset is going to work its way up the job ladder so soon you'll be finding the same true of management jobs, etc. I think whites in the UK and the US should try a lot harder to become truly fluent in at least one other language.

  3. You're right, there wouldn't be, but one millionaire footballer/celeb calling another millionaire footballer/celeb a racist name doesn't tell us much.

I still think being white is the 'best' race to be in the UK in terms of opportunity. If you're a white male, over 6 foot, good looking and well educated then you've pretty much hit the jackpot.

if you look at black comedians most of them are racist, although its all in good humour it doesnt work the other way around

i dont really understand racism, hating people for the colour of there skin is as stupid as hating people for the food they do or dont like

it annoys me but, iv found myself actually going out my way to not look racist!

when you see groups murdering people for there skin etc i understand but somethings coming across as racist is just too sensitive in my opinion, blackboard has to be whiteboard now, ba ba blacksheeps banned etc

  5. There are some. Daniel Tosh does some seriously racial humor and he always seems to get away with it. You can argue the funniness of his stuff but he does go there when not many white people do.

  6. Medicine is really pushed in a lot of asian countries mainly because of status. It's probably changed in recent years but certainly in India a few decades ago, being a doctor was the absolute pinnacle of society.

Context is important in 'racist' situations.

It isn't whites who've had a history of slavery and brutalisation at the hands of black people. To be white is rarely a downside in any circumstances when it comes to jobs, profiling, etc. Historically, non-whites have suffered the most throughout history in regards to racism and this continues to a smaller degree today. This is acknowledged fact.

No denying there are black racists, of course there.

Also Jungo, if you can't find non-whites who have been prosecuted for racism then you're not looking hard enough. It will definitely be a smaller proportion than white people who have been prosecuted but is that really a surprise in a majority white population?

  8. Tended to be white people who were racist in America and Britain. You know, the center of the universe and its moon.

  9. Good point. Being of an ethnic minority or disadvantaged group will aid you when applying for jobs at department stores and McDonalds, given the liberal culture of subtle affirmative action and attempting to "even things up" in recent decades, but if you're a black man or a female, for example, going for the top job at a bank or to be the headteacher of a well-performing school, your chances will be very slim.

I find it ironic how politicians' (perhaps well intentioned) attempts to stop racism in the workplace, have actually led to more racism and basically * off all people!

  10. Never mind racism,it's a minor inconvenience compared to Iraqi womens suffering, watched a prog last week about Iraqi war widows, fair game for abuse from everyone, honour killings, beatings, abandoned by communities and families, even the wee bairns are treated shockingly, women get a fairly poor deal in most societies:54:

I think it was a couple of weeks ago, that the * who was the leader of those racist scum, beat up a screw in prison for taking away his Sky TV. Everyone is afraid of him in the prison. They should just hang the *.

  12. To be fair, they're totally different objects mate :56:
You could still have both in the one classroom, but it would be utterly pointless.

And I don't think Ba Ba Black Sheep was ever banned in any school, i'm sure that was just a Daily-Mail-type urban myth.

  13. I don't really like the word context. What does slavery do for some poor white kid who grew up in a trailer park compared to a black kid from a gated community? Like AwesomeCaz said, the way that it's treated now a) punishes the working class who haven't exactly benefited from power or wealth and b) maintains the connections that white Europeans have in the business and political world so it does very little to actually solve anything.

  14. The Govt and other institutions have set quotas for something like 12% of their employees to be non-white (in line with the country as a whole) which imo is racist.

I don't think there is anywhere in the world were White people are treated the same as non-white people in terms of Racism, reporting and convictions.

  15. Agree with this. Also see positive discrimination as a form of social engineering. Crucially one that doesn't work in my favour.

  16. You've clearly never heard of the Barbary States.

Slavery is not a white versus black thing...Slavery has been prominent in the 'non-white' parts of the world for all of Human history, apart from roughly 100-200 years in the 18-19th century.

Who said it would solve anything? Context is used to understand, which in turn leads to solutions.

Are you talking about equality legislation in workplaces? I wouldn't say it punishes working class people to employ people from ethnic minorities. I acknowledge it is a sensitive and complex issue. I would prefer it based on merit but the legislation that was originally brought in was because many employers were purposely discriminating against people based on similar indicators.

    I haven't, enlighten me.

I'm not saying it was, but you can't downplay the industrial levels of black slaves taken to white nations in the past or the discrimination that non-whites have faced in the law, society, employment and many other fields up to the present day.

Racism is abhorrent from whoever it comes from I'm in no way saying white or black people are inherently more racist.

  19. The whole problem with it though is that it just causes more division and ironically, more racism. I have no doubt that the employers and politicians who pioneered these "equality" legislatures had the right intentions but it simply doesn't work as easily as they assume.

Give more jobs to black people and you're therefore taking jobs away from white people. As has been said, it's never the best paid and influential positions which are advertised as part of these positive discrimination schemes - the government would never take that risk - and so what you have is basically poor white people resenting and hating poor black people. Both groups are slaves to rich white men, but they don't know it and so confront each other instead.

Look in Scotland right now as a perfect example of this, the amount of bitter huns who genuinely believe there is some vatican-led conspiracy to turn their beloved staunch nation into a green-and-white * fest of Republican activity, all because Catholics have now been given top jobs after years of sectarian discrimination.

    Divide and conquer, job done.

I see your point here and have seen first hand people who are frustrated. It is of course a complex issue but what do we do? Abolish that aspect of equality legislation and hope the employer isn't racist or discriminatory. The percentage of those who are to be employed from ethnic minorities are supposed to be reflective of the proportion of the society they make up. I also agree with you that top jobs tend to be barred the same way as they usually are for women but does it mean we should still abolish the only legislation that gives those who are most likely to be discriminated against a leg up?

Ideally, I would like to see some changes in legislation myself and I recognise that people are * off about this legislation. At the same time, would so many be * off if there was enough jobs rather than the tiny pool we are all fighting to get in to? Things like this flair up in times of high unemployment, it would be worse for those who are ethnic minorities in this country.
