Comparing Sutton and Doyle is an insult mate

He's not comparing them in ability, he's comparing them in style.

Maybe not now - but Doyle in his prime was a very good player. Liverpool had bids of 9 million rejected in 2010. He has experience of playing and scoring at the highest level - premiership, world cup and european chamionship campaigns and was voted Ireland player of the year at least once - an Ireland squad where Stokes never came close

Comparing the amount of goals they scored is comparing their ability. I used to be a big fan of Doyle, was very underrated but those days are long gone now. He can't be Hooper's replacement.

He's not once compared their ability their, he's explained the same sort of style. Does he say once he's about as good as Sutton?

Looks like we've walked away from this deal. It might be worth thinking about who we could actually sign and not who we wished we could sign. Realistically the best cheap players are all signed up, so it's a high risk affair no matter who we sign. I imagine Doyle would have been an easy guy for Lenny and Stokes to work with. Could he come straight into the team and get goals in Europe? Well he might be a good bet. He knows the club, would want a shot at the Champions League, he's played with Stokes in the national team.

So i can see why we'd look to sign him, but their is one very simple solution - we go and get the goals with the team we already have.

Realistically we should have buried Elfsborg 3-0. Stokes and Forrest were unlucky with the chances that fell their way, but sooner rather than later, those chances will start going in. My bet is, they will come easier playing Stokes and Samaras up front.

Tony Watt needs to be playing in the same spot, or over as cover for Forrest. The dutch guy plays left with Samaras and Mulgrew (who needs to start games)

We could also go with signing a right midfielder and playing Commons up front, 19 goals from midfield, reckon he could get 30.

So their are things we could do, but the simple solution is to get a stop gap player like Doyle to see us through.

I can't help thinking that we're making life a little bit difficult for ourselves by leaving it so late to get replacements for Wanyama and Hooper.

At this point in time, it's not good enough to have left the tie against Elfsborg so open. If you look at the likes of unpopular guys like Leigh Griffiths: he got 27 in 36 last season and was the form striker all year round. We'd be better putting a bid in for him at 22 he's scoring and that's what matters. We might not make 10million on a re-sale, but we could make 2 or 3. More importantly, we'd have a fast striker who's guaranteed goals in the league. Someone who gets goals in the league might not get them against AC Milan, but would probably do ok against the likes of Elfsborg, and we may pay a hefty price for being so slow in getting a proper striker in.

The other thing that's gonna be interesting is to see what kind of impact the new dutch guy can bring to the team. That might just be the lift we need, to move players from out wide left to more central positions.

No I didn't even read the first word.

People on here have a tendancy to post "Great post :50:" as soon as a long post appears :56:

The only thing that matters is the guy's a complete tosspot and would be a liability to the club, no thanks.

Really? Every striker has periods of ups and downs. Sutton was dire at Chelsea before he came to us, 1 goal in 28 games in the league for them. They signed him for £10M, which was a lot of money in 1999.

I find it pretty ironic people are slating Doyle for poor recent form, when the last good target man we had came here under similar circumstances.

Has Kevin Doyle ever had a good season? The most he's scored is 19 in one season.

    He's below average at best.

Sutton scored goals right left and centre for Blackburn consistently for years, and helped win them premiership titles fs. Was joint top scorer a number of times, even in his last season at Norwich he banged in 25 goals. The guy was an excellent goal scorer and overall player for nearly a decade before he signed for Celtic. Ok, one * season but still. Was it a risk from Martin O'neill? Aye to an extent, but all those excellent seasons overshadowed one bad season and rightly so. Sutton was far far superior and versatile player to Kevin Doyle. 10 times the player Doyle will ever be.
