Hails from the deep south...

Self admitted Celtic NooB, just wanting to say 'ello to everyone.

Made a trip from the states last summer to visit Glasgow and the small town of Dunlop (30mi SE of Glasgow) to see where the family/clan originated from, meet the locals, and toss a few back in a proper "Yankee Scot returning home" fashion...

And that is when I discovered Celtic...

Now, pardon my ignorance, you see we americans have trouble even calling the game by it's proper name, so having lived life up til now without a clue regarding Celtic means I have a lot of catching up to do.

I plan to atone for my shameful Pre-Celtic lifestyle by instilling a proper love for both Celtic and the Game in my infant daughter. As I write this, she sleeps in the other room in her Green and White Pajamas with the Celtic crest on the front and back... When she is old enough, we will make a father-daughter trip to see the Bhoys at home. Can never have enough Celtic-Chicks in this world IMO...

Anyways, I have been schooled in the basics of things by a kind hearted Dubliner I fly with that took pity upon my american mega-ignorance regarding European Football, and the Scottish Premiership in particular... Thank * for his intervention, saving me from some horrid fate such as mistakenly rooting for the Rangers without understanding a f-ing thing about them and why they are total *-clowns.

Ahhh, until I can travel back again, I guess I will have to make due with attending DC United home games (American MLS), and watching the Bhoys only on television...

So if you do not mind the occasional dumb question from me, I offer in trade the invitation to join me for a few rounds on my tab if any Celtic fan finds his/herself in Savannah Georgia, US of A...

Questions, hmmm...

Ok, "Hoops"... I assume it refers to the traditional (Uniform you think of when you think of Celtic) green and white horizontal stripes ---> am I right...?

Second Question... Being half Scot/half Irish I guess I have been drawn to the fact that Celtic is, well... Celtic in nature... (heck, my baby was born 9mos after St. Patricks day, so you can tell I tend to celebrate such with zeal). But I am curious if the fans (and team) consider themselves just a scottish Club, or something moreso. For example, I saw the various efforts to help Irish player development... I am proud of both my Irish and Scotish heritage, but am I correct in assuming that Celtic FC appeals to each... ?

Third question, The rangers have been called the "huns", while I have been told the basics of the historcal and modern reasons forthe rivalry, just curious why that nickname is used... ?

As for your questions you have answered them all right yourself

The huns comes from atilla the hun and all his hun followers who raped, mudered and pillaged every town they passed through kinda like what the huns do in scotland and europe (once a season) LOL

1.Yes the hoops are indeed vertical stripes which join right round the strip, and the club is known to many as 'the hoops', The clubs strip itself is called 'the hoops'
2.The flag of Ireland and the flag of scotland fly over Celtic Park, therfore the club aknowledge our kind of dual nationality. Founded by the Irishman Brother Walfrid, we are a club created in 1888 for Irish Catholics, by Irish Catholics, and celebrated now by their decendants, though not entirely. However the club play in Scotland in the Scottish Preimer League, therfore we are also a scottish club. I for one, and i'm sure there are others among us celtic fans, am very proud of my Irish roots but i also love scotland, the country i live in.
3.We don't like them, so we call them the 'huns'. To be honest i dont really know the reason why and i hope someone can post on this thread and shed some light on the matter

no mate we need 2 new keepers by the looks of it we will only get one IMO and i see him coming from outside of the uk.

If there was one simple answer to this question a lot of the threads on here would be discarded!

There's always debate about whether celtic is Scottish or Irish - I think the general consensus is that it's a Scottish club with a very proud Irish heritage.

Sorry bout that just the man askin asked if it were vertical stripes, and without really thinking i said the above. Perhaps my logic was why say vertical when stipes are supposed to be vertical. Anyway sorry if it annoyed anyone
